S was taken for Sweden, and they needed one of two letters or less.....I think it comes from the Swiss German spelling of Switzerland, which is something like (and apologies to the entire german-speaking world) Schweitze
From the Latin. C = Confederatio, H = Helveti, "Confederation of the Helvetii". The Helvetii were one of the bigger tribes in the area now called Switzerland - French: "Suisse", German: "Schwyz", Italian: "Svizzera", those being three of the four languages, the fourth being Rhto-Romansch (or Romansch, for short).
