Attitude to gay people in New Zealand

Just been booking hotels for a trip to New Zealand and noticed that a very high number of them state they are "Gay Friendly". Doesn't bother me as I'm neither gay nor homophobic, just curious why they feel the need to state it.

Is NZ traditionally anti-gay or is it a place of gay pilgrimage, a bit like Brighton?

Ev, I'm fine with homosexuals being made welcome and people really loving sheep, just as long as it doesn't become compulsory.

Abdul, Yes I noticed it last time I went to Brighton and I know Brighton has a big gay scene. I wasn't aware NZ was famed for it though. It was places all over NZ not just one town. Just curious to know how close I need to keep the wife.

It stops the embarassment of trying to book into a hotel which insists that for the 'comfort' of it's other guests, they would really rather prefer that gay couples sleep in twin beds, separate rooms, etc..................or a different hotel !!

What you have to take into account is the "Pink Pound".
Gay people (both male and female) have a greater amount of money to spend than most heterosexuals of the same age bracket.
(Say 20 to 50)
this is because Gays have no children,and with this no expenditure on all that comes with children etc.
This means they have a larger amount of available money to spend,and as such hoteliiers,restaurants,shops etc around the world have realised this and advertise with a bias towards gays.
You cannot blame businesses for such advertising,they are after all in the business of making money,no matter where it comes from.

Compared to the UK, NZ was quite late in decriminalising homosexuality -1986

There has recently been a bill to abolish the so called "Gay panic" defense to homophobic attacks.

I would imagine that Gay issues are probably relatively high in peoples agenda in NZ

Thanks for the responses, in particular Jake's. I could see the reason behind the policy just not why it was so prevalent in NZ compared to Europe or the US for example.
