This is going to be boring to some and even freak out the younger members. I thought it might be a cool idea to ask members to add a couple "in my days' extracts - only as you remember them, not from what you've heard.

1. I wasn't allowed to sit on the couch/sofa until I was 12 years old.
2. My parent didn't have a car when i was going to school, I had to walk.
3. 78rpm vinyl record.
4. My first car was 25 years old and only had those flipout indicators that didn't work so i had to use my hand to signal.
5. I had to come inside when the streetlights went on, until I was 16.

Aha! Now I've got it! I knew corporation pop rang a bell somewhere, but of course it was a euphemism for tap water!
though it was jungle juice - sherbert that made your finger & tongue go yellow.
I'm 57 and in my time:
we didn't have the warning saying 'Doors closing.' We got on the train, the doors closed, and if your hand was sticking out, it scraped along the tunnel all the way to the next station and it was a bloody stump at the end. But the base fare was only a dollar so that was ok :)
don't worry, I can writte, but my brother can't :(

Tjeez, you're right mike. 78s were a sort of bakelite and made a dreaded pop sound if you sat on them.
I am 46 but do not consider myself old - until recently.

I volunteer in a charity shop and one of the young volunteers pointed to an LP and asked what it was. Talking to him I discovered that I was a few years older than his parents.

We never had a family car as neither of my parents could drive.
We had an outside loo in our first home.
We went wandering for hours in a big wood near our house - not an adult in sight.
All my friends had two parents.
I wanted a dog and got a little brother instead. Life was cruel.
You could have taken your little brother for a walk on his lead. I vaguely remember having to wear reins, a kind of harness with a lead on which my mother would hold so that I could not wander off in the street. It had bells on, so if you did manage to slip the leash the ringing would make you found more easily. When I was 4 and my baby brother was born, eventually the reins were transferred to him. i remember taking him for his first toddle holding the leash - I felt very grown-up.
What was those things called that looked like a brown twig you could buy from the corner shop and when you chewed them they were like yellow strings of wood, they were delicious?

We had an outside loo, gas lights, and a fire-oven my nan had to blacklead. She used to yellow-stone the front step. We used to play on the bomb site where the houses at the end of the street had been flattened. We never owned a car but my father used to hire one for our week at Bridlington, and we didn't have a couch we had a settle.
Hi wildwood..
56 - today!
I remember
Wearing a liberty bodice...in fact wearing many layers but still having a bare knees gap between the bottom of my skirts & the top of my socks.
Ice on the inside of bedroom windows in winter & the milk from the milkman froze & popped out the top of the bottle.
Helping my mum with the washing, starching & mangling on 'wash day'
Playing in fields full of wild flowers ....and we picked them! And the sound of skylarks.
Making a tent with the clothes horse & an old blanket.

I could go on... :o)
did none of you´s have a coal fire?? i can remember like it was yesterday, my mum getting up every morning in the 60´s to fetch the coal from the coal shed, and get the fire lit. In the 70´s our bedrooms werent heated, putting newspapers under our mattress sheets to preserve any heat there was, couple of times a week ging downstairs to get some heat from the fire.
i´m 50 by the way
Blimey...

1. My mother let me smoke in front of her from the age of 14/15. My stepfather objected, but lost....

2. My mother took me on one foreign holiday at the age of 16, to Fuengirola. By the age of 22, I'd starting taking HER on holiday. At 23, I took her to the Bahamas, and will never forget the look on her face when she arrived.

3. I had my last "hiding" at the age of 23, when I turned and hit her back. She's never raised a finger to me since.

4. Even at the age of 33, I'd have to be married before she'd let me share a bed with a man under her roof.
piggynose - we had a coal fire - it was a ritual each morning for my Mum to clean the cinders out and relay for the evening. A piece of coal would fall out of the grate on a regular basis and Mum would claim off the insurance for a new rug.

My first car was a Ford Anglia but it was the black model that looked like a Ford Popular. It only had 3 gears and you had to double de clutch everytime you changed gear. It cost me £50.00 and was built like a tank.
Yep we had a coal fire, we were burning hot in the front and freezing at the back, the damn thing always went out when Dad was due home, every afternoon there was a copy of the newspaper pinned up against it with the coal tongs trying to "draw" the fire back. Jack Frost all over the inside of our bedroom windows in the winter. I never had bedroom slippers til I was 4, it was so cold that we would jump out of bed and get dressed in our clothes straight away. 1963 my brother was 7 and I remember it being so cold that the washing stood up by itself when mum brought it in off the line...
The slippers were when I was 14 not 4!
