The Americans enjoy religious freedom. It would be a sad day for them if their President didn't support that concept.
Obama has with that one statement ensured he will not serve a second term, not that he would get re-elected anyweay, the americans have seen him for exactly what he is.

The American people need to fight against this tooth and nail, let them have their mosque somewhere else if they must have it.
"Are Barack Hussein Obama Muslim roots beginning to show through? "

This seems to imply that you have to be a Muslim to support the mosque near GZ.

To explain: If Obama's muslim roots are showing because of his stance on this issue (which is to support the mosque), then that implies that he's supporting the mosque because he has muslim roots and not for any other reason. Therefore, the implication seems to be that if you probably need to be a muslim to support the mosque near ground zero.

Doesn't that seem illogical?
"It would be a sad day for them if their President didn't support that concept."

it was a sad day obama got elected and it will be an even sadder day if this insult goes ahead.

Have you seen the official Project Start date ? 9/11
Sorry - typo in my post:

"Therefore, the implication seems to be that if you probably need to be a muslim to support the mosque near ground zero. "

Should read:

"Therefore, the implication seems to be that you probably need to be a muslim to support the mosque near Ground Zero"
Took me ages to find the typo...

No not necessarily Kromo, but stating his support for the Mosque at the Iftar dinner he put on for Muslims at the White House, to celebrate the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, gives one a slight inkling don't you think?

Was there one of these bashes put on at the 'Mansion House' do you know?

That's a great idea, AOG. It would send out a message to the Muslims in our community that they are a valued section of the population.
The Geezer beat you to it AOG! I said he was a closet Muzzy a long time before he was elected.

He's a Christian isn't that the religion that preaches forgiveness not that any sane person could possibly blame all Muslims for the actions of a minority .

Anyway as much as it might be considered distasteful so near to ground zero it's not against the law to build a Mosque in New York so they are perfectly entitled to do so.
I agree with bazwillrun that this is an insult to white Americans, and that it has probably sealed Obama's fate for a second term.
However, the idea of a dinner for senior British Muslims at the Mansion House does seem like a good idea.
"but stating his support for the Mosque at the Iftar dinner he put on for Muslims at the White House, to celebrate the beginning of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, gives one a slight inkling don't you think? "

Not in the context of American politics, no.

It's pretty much standard practice for events of that kind to be held or attended in Washington by the political top dog - it's all part of usual politicking and is a very normal way of approaching or sending a message to whatever group is intended.

And before you say it, the fact that he's obviously trying to maintain the support of American muslims (which as far as I know he's had for a long while) doesn't mean he's a muslim either.
I wouldn't back the building of any mosque - or any church or synagogue for that matter - but as far as I'm aware this mosque is going to be built several blocks from Ground Zero. It it were overlooking the area or prominent in the area I could understand all the fuss, but it isn't.

As for Mr Obama's muslim roots beginning to show through, that's an incredibly naive thing to say and it's stupid. I guarantee you'll never see Michelle banged up in a burqa.
Muslim roots showing? Nah.

Roots of the President of a nation that enshrines religious freedoms (despite what Fox News would want you to think) showing through? Of course.
Yes, we embrace religious freedoms here. This mosque is a hot topic here in NY and I see it has become World News too. It should be built someplace else. It really is a hard nut to swallow seeing that this is most likely going to be built near Ground Zero.
As a white American who didn't vote for Obama (based on his politics not his skin color) I agree with him in this case. As usual The Economist said it best in its Lexington column in the August 7 issue:

"Cordoba House is not being built by al-Qaeda. To the contrary, it is the brainchild of Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, a well-meaning American cleric who has spent years trying to promote interfaith understanding, not an apostle of religious war like Osama bin Laden. He is modelling his project on New York’s 92nd Street Y, a Jewish community centre that reaches out to other religions. The site was selected in part precisely so that it might heal some of the wounds opened by the felling of the twin towers and all that followed. True, some relatives of 9/11 victims are hurt by the idea of a mosque going up near the site. But that feeling of hurt makes sense only if they too buy the false idea that Muslims in general were perpetrators of the crime. Besides, what about the feelings, and for that matter the rights, of America’s Muslims—some of whom also perished in the atrocity?"

Later in the piece: "Imam Feisal says he chose “Cordoba” in recollection of a time when the rest of Europe had sunk into the Dark Ages but Muslims, Jews and Christians created an oasis of art, culture and science."

I encourage all to read the full article to see a well-reasoned argument as to why the mosque/community center should be built.
and yet the Saudi consulate, the actual nationality of most of the hijackers I believe, is on the same island and no comment is made.
Here’s the actual site of the proposed mosque (red box) and its proximity to Ground Zero. (Courtesy of Gromit).

How many churches have been built in the Muslim world?
Quite a lot actually. Have a look at Cairo.
