School proms, why?
26 Answers
I dont know why we in the UK have adopted this silly idea fron the USA of having a prom at the end of every school year. It puts tremendous pressure on parents who perhaps cant afford to go out and buy a prom dress, not to mention the big limo some of them have to have to get there. As usual it all ends up as a competition as to who has the best/most expensive dress. What's wrong with just having a school disco?
(This is my answer from another thread regarding what to wear at a prom but I thought it was a valid subject for discussion)

My three kids all went to end of school proms at 16, I thought the same at the time, a silly import from the USA.
Think its a bit different here though, definitely not dependant on having a date, the girls go as groups, and likewise the boys.
It was lovely to see the normally scruffy lads in their (hired) tuxedos and the girls in their ballgowns (TKmax do a roaring trade on their £40 evening dresses at prom time!)
They all had a great time!
