My reportee has just returned from a holiday in Singapore and she said its a totally different world to Britain. Apparently the streets are completely clean and if you drop litter you could be arrested. She also said that they don't allow chewing gum in the country so there are no gum blobs all over the pavements like here. Crime is also very low and you can leave your doors and windows open without fear of burglary. Not sure which part she went to but is it like this throughout Singapore?
Their choice, their rules, so therefore they ahve to be respected.
I have been many, many times, to Sing, being a major centre for oil markets.
However, I couldnt live there......
A country where they put plates in public housing lifts so that if you pizz antisocially in them, the plate reacts chemically and drives a camera to take a pic of you.
Geradr Depardieu wouldnt stand a chance.....
Personally, I enjoy pizzing in a lift, particularly if it is one in Claridges. So not for me.
Exactly as I said "who are we to judge?". We are nobody's when it comes to the laws of Singapore.
It would be nice to be able to walk around the streets (where I live anyway) without coming across an empty discarded crisp packet or treading on someones chewing gum or dog crap. Although I agree that there are a lot of human rights issues in Singapore, the majority of people there seem to enjoy living there and as above a lot of people like to visit.
When we went on the underground there, we saw notices saying that you would be fined for bending your ticket, which seemed a bit on the harsh side. We loved it there, especially (at that time) the last unspoiled part of the country, which is where there was a nature reserve - superb!
I like Singapore very much, of course I've only seen it from a tourists point of view. The place is always clean and the people are friendly. Chewing-gum is a no-no don't eat gum or throw it on the street. My OH ordered three pairs of trousers from a tailors shop in Singapore shortly before we were due to fly out to Australia. The trousers were delivered the next morning to our hotel room, and they fit perfectly.
