My son (who is 7) became very sad after hearing about the miners in Wales who lost their lives recently and he decided on his own that there wasn't as he said "He wouldn't let this happen".

I tried to give him the other argument that God was there in bringing the community and families together, but the tragedy has confirmed it for him!

What do I say to that?

You could say that as life is but a small period of their existence, and we all have to move on sometime, God saw no need to extend their lives when they were ready to move on to the next stage. God doesn't act as a safety net to keep us safe no matter what risky thing we decide to do. We have to learn to accept what our actions bring us.
