Spitting in the street - disgusting habit

Why do some people feel the need to spit every few yards as they walk down the street? Have they got a problem? Are they ill? Do they need to see a doctor?
It's mostly teenagers and young men that indulge in this filthy disgusting habit but I don't understand why they do it. I suppose they think for some reason it makes them look big and hard.

I remember a street sign prohibiting "Hawking and Spitting" when I was a boy. In those days it seemed to be ignored despite there being a fine for offenders.

I can still just remember the last real 'spit and sawdust' pub . Sawdust on the bar floor and a spittoon in the middle. Must have been the very early 1970s.

I often wonder what planet some abers live on. I can not for the life of me remember the last time I saw someone spit once, never mind every few yards.

Off the top of my head 'Sir' Alex Ferguson is the only serial offender I could name and even he seems to have been told to chew gum instead.

I have never seen my 14 year old son spit once I have contact with lots of teenagers and do not witness any of those serial spitting either.
I think some of you just need to whinge.

it is foul. people who do it should be fined from idiots in the street to idiots on the football pitch, tennis court or elsewhere. i have asthma and frequently become clogged up but i use a hanky.

Can't believe you have never seen anyone spitting publicly MT - I worked in the offices at a well-known multi-national company for over 30 years and every morning walking in to work we used to have to walk very carefully to avoid spit puddles which the night shift workers had made coming off shift half an hour earlier - very disgusting. Personnel department got involved as it was happening on a mammoth scale to the point where visitors to the site were commenting. Notices were put up with threats of suspension!
