Spitting in the street - disgusting habit

Why do some people feel the need to spit every few yards as they walk down the street? Have they got a problem? Are they ill? Do they need to see a doctor?
It's mostly teenagers and young men that indulge in this filthy disgusting habit but I don't understand why they do it. I suppose they think for some reason it makes them look big and hard.

I can't remember the last time I witnesses someone spit in the street.

I can remember being in Karachi in 1962 and seeing some guy taking a dump in the gutter. Spitting was more common though.

I reckon it was much worse when I was a spotty youth, but it is still disgusting.

Used to love Clint Eastwood doing it in the 'Dollar' films - and others. Particularly remember him in 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' gobbing a chaw of tobacco right on top of a scorpion - classic!

It's a national pastime in china, everyone does it, everywhere....all ages, all sexes, it's just the done thing and turns your stomach. I believe they're trying to stop it, think they'll have a difficult job on their hands though.

Runners frequently spit when running. Other than that I can't say I can recall seeing it done much - if at all - in the street. Is it actually a health hazard (previously it was thought to help spread TB)? Or is it just a 'disgusting habit'

I'd say I see it almost every day...maybe it's due to living in a city. And if I don't see the actual action...I see the results-almost as bad as slugs..eeuuww.

Have just seen Ann's post from much earlier in the day regarding notices on buses re No Smoking and No Spitting. I think that this stemmed from the days when the chewing of tobacco was much more prevalent, if indeed it exists at all today, and the pungent juices resulting therefrom were frequently expectorated.

I parked my car this morning and went to put the coins into the machine. Somebody had left a large deposit of spit covering the slot where the money goes in, there are such nice people around.

I lived in China for 3 years and one becomes somewhat immune to gozzing - after all you see far worse out on the streets and roads.

well the female neighbour doesn't seem to care, hawk, spit, then goes in doors, then few minutes comes out and does it again. it's vile, the noise and the mess.

I only ever tried this one once, and then only after a few sherbets and backup behind me: passed a couple of "hard" young lads, replete with baseball caps and T shirts, of the full mature age of 16 - 17 summers. The taller of the two, in an act of defiance on passing a few old codgers, hawked and spat on the ground. I immediately accosted him and said, "Young man, do you not think that that was an extremely unkind and unfeeling thing to do?"

Somewhat confused, the young lad said to me "Whattderyer mean like?"

I replied, "Judging by your actions I assumed that you had just been giving your boyfriend oral sex. Imagine how hurt he must feel that you do not love him enough to swallow!"
