Why is it that it's mostly male pedophiles who are highlighted in the news? where-as there are just as many female child sex abusers. Why don't they get as much news coverage?

I forgot this is a UK site and you're probably all asleep, I'm off now to do some shopping, speak later.
Do you have any stats. to support that assertion? It seems unlikely to me.
I don't know about the //where-as there are just as many female child sex abusers// bit, but Society regards Male abuser on girl a lot worse than Female abuser on boy. Ofcourse it should be the same because the mental damage can be the same for each sex, but general opinion can not be changed overnight.

It is pretty much the same with female gays who are quicker accepted by Society than male gays. Not right but what can one do?
How do you know there are just as many female sex abusers? Have you counted them all?
where's your data? there certainly are female abusers and IMO they are treated with even more horror than the maile ones, but the frequency doesn't seem to be as high.
It may be a hangover from Victorian times. Laws were passed making acts of homosexuality illegal amongst males, but females weren't included - the reason being that Queen Victoria, who had to give Royal Assent to the laws, refused to believe that females got up to such things.
I'm not aware of there being as many female child sex abusers as male paedophiles. Certainly I'm of the understanding that female paedophiles are quite rare. It is also my experience that in cases where the woman is the sexual offender towards a child, the horror and disgust is generally worse than when it is a man.
//where-as there are just as many female child sex abusers. //

I'd like to see the statistics to support that claim.
I agree with everyone else here. Its just complete nonsense to suggest that there are just as many women child abusers as there are men.

It was Jimmy Saville, not Janey Saville don't forget.
Article on female paedophiles here;

http://news.bbc.co.uk.../magazine/8022861.stm

from the article;
"Professor Kevin Browne, who has been researching the maltreatment of children for 30 years, says between 5% and 10% of abuse against pre-pubescent children in the UK is committed by females, but only about 5% is thought to involve a woman acting alone."
Most young boys would be quite happy to be initiated into sex by an older woman.

It's probably happening, but no ones complaining about it.
Did you read the article, Hopkirk? The lad questioned didnt seem too happy, especially since the older woman was his mum.

And we are talking pre-pubescents here, rather than teens, where the view of the participants may differ.
Interesting article and comments. Out of all the cases booked in to clinic, I can only think of two that had female perpetrators... actually, I'm pretty sure one of the cases I'm thinking of was a request for an expert opinion from the doc and we didn't see them in clinic.

I know someone who works in socials services, they nor the police don't purse them because i'ts not easy to prove, the police also agree with them, according to SS and the police they say it's easier to prove a male has being abusive, they say cases where women are sexually abusive are hard to prove. There have been a few where the women have being tried and convicted but a lot of them get away with it.
Why would it be harder to prove ? ?
This is a bit like domestic violence, there are probably many female perpetraters it's just we don't hear about it. Thinking back 30+ years ago say between the ages of 13 and 16 I don't know how I'd have reacted to the attentions of an older woman however right or wrong they may or may not have been!

It;s hard for a child to say that they have been abused by a woman or their mother, for some reason it's easier to admit to being abused by a male. The police and social service never really believed it happened until recently, people are now coming forward now 20-30-40 years later and telling what happened.
Still doesn't mean there are just as many. It's a fact that there isn't.
@SQ you are just making stuff up now.

Anecdote - or "what someone told you" is not evidence. You offer no evidence to support your assertion that "people find it more difficult to admit to being abused by a woman". Thats just your opinion, and whilst you are entitled to an opinion, that does not mean it actually has any merit.

The wealth of evidence, derived from real world observation and responses from trained professionals, gathered over decades, says that whilst women can be abusers, they are far less common - and in most of these circumstances, there is a man involved somewhere.
I do work with social services and you're talking out of your 'arris love. It's very difficult to prove sexual abuse either way, male of female, it's quite rare there are physical signs of abuse. In fact, a lot of the physical signs of abuse can also be physical signs of some other medical condition too, you have to interpret them in context of many, many things, not just the allegation. It's not easy to prove sexual abuse period, it makes no difference whether the alleged perpetrator is male or female.

The literature tells us that female abusers and female paedophiles (not always the same thing, same for male abusers and male paedophiles) are quite rare. I suspect that further investigation is warrented as I do wonder if there are more cases out there as it's still a taboo subject but CAIT are very unlikely to drop a case depending on the sex of the perpetrator, they'll drop a case because of lack of evidence or disclosure, but not because the perpetrator is male or female.

I imagine more work and research is being done on the subject of female abusers but your assertations of 'my mate says' are pretty rubbish I'm afraid.
