he states he is not trying to do this ... but i bet he would if he could!
but do you think they should try?
obviously there are loads of medical and scientific obstacles etc - but i assume he seems to think its possible.
so i am talking in general, society, ethics etc - what are the pros and cons etc?
could we reintroduce the neanderthal successfully?
on the surface i kind of like the idea ...
cheers

I don't think they were idiots and he or she would learn the same things we do. I think it is foolish - they surely wouldn't try to bring him/her up in the Neanderthal way. It wouldn't be possible. I saw a programme years ago in which they postulated there were people alive now with Neanderthal characteristics. They were left handed, shorter than average, had shaggy' overhanging eyebrows and their toes would not part (try it and you will see what I mean). At the time my daughter was living at home and we looked at each other in amazement - it was an exact description of my husband - we checked his toes to make sure. I kid you not, this is true.
how do you mean society? physically? or mentally?
he does note that the woman would have to be a special strong minded woman to agree to this... it couldnt be just any woman.
from examinations of skeletons etc, it is belieevd that they would carry and give birth pretty much as we do, so what other problems would there be - other than normal pregnancy complications?
dont forget this child would be half homo sapien.
i suppose its the same as say breeding 2 types of dog ... they are pretty much the same thing, so can be safely bred, but obviously not all dogs can cross breed but only due to size differences.

I think it would be unethical.
I am not sure exactly what scientific objective would be progressed through such an experiment, and what i took from the article was that the guy himself was pretty much dead set against it.
I know people say that you might be hard-pressed to notice a neanderthal if they were walking down the street, dressed in modern day clothing etc- but I do not actually think that is true.
Breeding a child purely for an experiment, in the full knowledge that they would be the subject of curiosity, experiment, observation, possibly insult, rejection and violence seems more than a little immoral to me....
As a society, we find the idea of selecting for gender morally unacceptable, for the most part - this goes some way beyond that.
