How many people don't have a passport and are then looked down upon or disbelieved? Just because I have no desire to travel to other countries why am I treated with disgust and then I have a real problem proving I am me! If proof is an everyday problem then we should have gone ahead with ID cards shouldn't we?

If it is such a problem then get a provisional driving licence even if you never intend to drive.
>>>any ideas of official proofs then?

Although Citizen Cards are usually used as proof of age by young people (seeking to get served alcohol, etc), they're available to anyone, irrespective of age, for £15. They can be used as proof of ID, for example, on all domestic and UK-Ireland flights by all carriers except Ryanair.

Douglas, none of those were applicable.

So long ago that bank account opened, (pre computers, mobile phones, credit card machines and pin numbers) no such requirements wanted.
Eddie, why should I?
Happy to have a proper ID card.
>>>I understand the ID scheme would not allow travel

EU law allows free movement across all 27 countries to EU citizens who can prove their identity via a government-issued ID card. So, if we'd gone ahead with them, UK ID cards could have been used for travel anywhere within the EU. (Indeed, many people who had UK ID cards under the trial scheme actually used them for foreign travel).

Eddie you obviously didn't read one of my responses. I do have a driving licence but an upcoming appointment requires photo ID and my licence is in limbo having its details changed, but the problem is still there, the first choice is a passport and the incredulous response one gets when you say you do not have a passport is farcical, and that is grievance.
Could you expand on 'jumped up little official' and 'treated with disgust'?
No I am not being obtuse and I object to the implication that I am. It was help you wanted was it ?

Then go find something with a photograph on. Again best ask what is acceptable from those you wish to prove your ID to.
Ask and be told, passport or driving licence.

Obviously old geezer you walk around with all manner of proof of ID with you, well done you. DaisyNonna, thank you for trying to explain but I think its a lost cause in this case. douglas9401, its any official behind a desk that plays the little jobsworth role, unfortunately thats almost everyone you meet these days. My question appears to have caused more questions than answers but thank you all anyway.
My post about the driving licence was aimed at daisy, If they really insist on a driving licence you will have to tell them it is with the DVLA being updated and they can see it as soon as it comes back. My son just changed his as he has moved house and it was back in just over a week.
You don't give the impression that you're keen to co-operate with laid down systems if you perceive them to be wrong.
Maybe they interfere with your serene progress through life?
I suppose you do realise that we're all waiting patiently behind your floorshow with our passports at the ready.

Believe me douglas9401, my progress through life is anything but serene and your impression of me couldn't be further off the mark.
Susan, hope you are not confronted by yet another obdurate male.
What happens if you need to verify your address. Being a widow bills are sent to me. If you are married and bills are in your husband's name what do you do?

"I am going to be in deep do-do shortly because my only chance of a visual 'proof', my driving licence, is off to have its details changed"

So, you do have a photo ID. That negates the reason for this rant.
Who am I ? It's an obvious answer.
