How many people don't have a passport and are then looked down upon or disbelieved? Just because I have no desire to travel to other countries why am I treated with disgust and then I have a real problem proving I am me! If proof is an everyday problem then we should have gone ahead with ID cards shouldn't we?

Who's treating you like that Susan?
Fourteen?
No.

If you don't wish to havr a passport, then fine, but then it is up to you to find some other way to prove your identity when necessary; not try to lumber everyone else with ID card schemes.

I am treated this way by any jumped up little official that has to tick their little boxes. I am going to be in deep do-do shortly because my only chance of a visual 'proof', my driving licence, is off to have its details changed so I really am a non-entity

OK old geezer, any ideas of official proofs then?
In England and Wales, only 16.9% of people over the age of 16 don't hold a passport. (75.7% hold a British passport; 7.4% hold a non-British passport).

So it is quite unusual not to have a passport in this country. ID cards would actually have been useful to many people as they were meant to cost only around half of what a passport does but they would have still been valid for travel (instead of a passport) within the whole of the EU.
I don't have a passport but I never have trouble proving who I am. I have a photo driving licence and have occasionally used that. Where are you having a problem ? do you have a bank card with your name on ?
Spent years trying to prove that I am me. No passport at the time. Could not afford to travel abroad. No driving licence, did not want to drive. It is a problem. Had an ID card when I was abroad.
Travel card
Student card
Young Scot card
Driving Licence (covered)
Digital tachograph card
Blue parking badge
Work ID
Your driving licence will be back within a week or two why are you going to be in trouble ? I can't understand why it is such a problem.
You could try carrying around your birth certificate. But most places that want proof will list you ID evidence they find acceptable.
I have a passport but I concur with you Susan. This country was in danger of licking Uncle Sam's "ass" by inflicting ID cards on us whether we wanted it or not. Murmurings of discontent were felt and the powers that be realised that a huge chunk of the population would effectively accept 'voluntary ID' in the form of passports and photo driving licenses. Many would shout "if you've got nothing to hide then it shouldn't be a problem" but that misses the point. We are a nation under surveillance and it's up to everyone to choose how much they feel the need to buy into it (or not).

Thanks for the data Buenchico. I understand the ID scheme would not allow travel, but as I have said I have no desire to travel and I object to paying out the cost of a passport just to prove who I am. There has to be some way to stop this passport proof culture.
Who am I ? It's an interesting question.
Wanted to make a will. Needed a photo ID. What would you suggest?
Question Author
Old geezer you appear to be missing the point. The photo is the proof required, birth certificate, utility bill, bank statement etc etc arenot enough or are you just being obtuse?
I assume you have a bank account ? What ID did you use to open that ? the same can be used in other situations.
I could carry around anybody's birth certificate. Not difficult to get.
(sorry to post off-topic)
Eddie51, did you miss my post to you?
When I opened my bank account no photographic ID was necessary.
