Does Anyone On Here Admit To 'keeping Up With The Jones'?
53 Answers
Why do people do it, especially if they can't really afford to financially?
Why do they get so jealous of other people's possessions and lifestyles that they will go into debt to try to keep up?
If they are financially secure, healthy and lead a comfortable life with no worries, why isn't that enough?
Is it because they feel so insecure about themselves that they feel inadequate just because they have less material possessions?
What are people's thoughts?

My S in L is very materialistic. When we meet, which is not that often, as she lives in Surrey it is quite amusing when she compliments me on my blouse, skirt, coat, etc. She'll ask 'Did you get that from John Lewis'? or wherever and I say no it was £3 in the Hospicecare shop or £5 in a Boot Sale. Her look of disgust is a sight to be seen!

Carrot99 - that's just pathetic!!
Can't get into the mindset of people who change the decor/bed linen every year or so to keep up with the latest trends! our house is a real mix and match and full of books (S in L doesn't possess a single book apart from some dictionaries kept upstairs - they are untidy) and yet when people come to visit is they love the 'comfortable' feel of our home and say so.

Yes, ChainGang, and do you buy watches to sell or to use ? Are you a dealer? If not,why would anyone sell their watch? Nothing personal against you; a steel Rolex is not as "flash" or "statementy" as others, anyway; but a man who thinks "Oh good, if desperate for cash, at least I can sell my watch at a profit of a thousand or two" is hardly in the big league , is he? It's more about why someone wears one, that's the point of this thread ,or my part in it. Some people may like Rolexes purely on aesthetic grounds. That's fine.
I bought my son a Rolex as a present, at his request. He's an estate agent in London, was about 22 at the time, and wore it just for work. His clients, as he knew, liked that image then. That's business ! Me, I'm happy with a 1948 Brequet.
