Gai Pride

A nearby town has a 'gai pride'(it is in France) march today. What's to be proud of? if the gais had acheived gaidom after a lifetime of effort then it would be understandable but they claim to be born that way. Perhaps I should start a 5' 10" pride march or a shoe size 9 pride march. But what to wear? there's the problem.

I suppose you could start a 5'10" pride march, Jom...you're free to do so. Though I can't recall when you were imprisoned, beaten up or tormented for being 5'10"...so I can't see why you would want to....

We have a gay pride march through Leeds every year. It's a great carnival atmosphere, the dresses and makeup have to be seen, everyone - 'hets' and gays all enjoy the day.

doctordb I went into a pub in Earl's Court, not knowing it was a 'gay' pub and I simply couldn't get served. The bar staff just totally ignored me but carried on serving other people.

Why not go along and see what all the fuss is about jomifl? You might be able to understand why they're proud and maybe enjoy yourself at the same time.

OH and I went into a gay pub a few years ago. MrAsk was always served first! He thought it was funny, I was a bit worried.

doctordb, The thought of having a look at the march did pass through my mind but I had a horrible thought that it would put me in the category of those people who used to go to the local asylum on a sunday afternoon for a little light entertainment. Anyway I really am not interested in which of the denizens are gay or not. Probably not a good idea to encourage them as they might think that they are somehow 'special'.

As others have said, "Gay Pride" tends to be more about not being ashamed than actual pride in a personal achievement.

I think there's a wider part of it as well - gay pride is not just people who are gay, it's for anyone who thinks that it is a genuine social and historic achievement that our society is one that no longer persecutes adults for who they have consenting sex with. Personally, I think that *is* an achievement, and something that as a country we should be proud of. If you to a Pride celebration, you won't just find homosexuals/bisexuals among the audience - you'll find an army of friends and supporters who aren't LGBT too.

where does it end? its a yearly event I imagine, acceptance has been obtained - time to turn it in people. Assimilate, integrate, stop standing under a banner - no-one cares anymore.

But as I said, it isn't really about demanding acceptance in UK society - it's about celebrating the fact that it's largely been achieved, and that the UK is one of a minority of societies in the world that has chosen not to persecute people based on who they love.
