Halal slaughter is no more cruel than 'standard' slaughter just need a tape loop playing a prayer from the Quran in the background and any slaughter house becomes a halal slaughter house. 100% of New Zealand lamb is Halal even though they do not mention it in the advertising. Very many other slaughter houses now work to Halal principles as it means the meat can be sold any where to Muslims as well as others. It is profit above all.
If you really do not want to risk eating Halal meat then stick to Pork it is the only way to be sure you are not eating Halal meat.
By the way Jewish slaughter is much worse but they only sell/ advertise the within the Jewish community so we do not hear about it.

From wiki:
Dhabīḥah (ذَبِيْحَة) is the prescribed method of slaughtering all meat sources, excluding fish and other sea-life, per Islamic law. This method of slaughtering animals consists of using a well-sharpened knife to make a swift, deep incision that cuts the front of the throat, the carotid artery, windpipe, and jugular veins to cause the least amount of suffering to the animal. The head of an animal that is slaughtered using halal methods is aligned with the qiblah. In addition to the direction, permitted animals should be slaughtered upon utterance of the Islamic prayer "in the name of God."

Zacs-Master Yes but now the prayer is on a tape loop playing in the background the slaughter man does not actually have to say it. The slaughter man does not even have to be Muslim . However Kosher slaughter can ONLY take place in a specific Kosher slaughter house that handles only Kosher meat the slaughter man has to be a Jew. This makes Kosher meat a lot more expensive so only Jews buy it.

I'm not an Animal Rights Activist, but I might describe myself as a sympathiser. I would argue that the testing of cosmetics on animals is unnecessary, a belief that appears to be shared with a large part of the population, given the success of the Body Shop chain of stores.
I'm interested, dieseldick, that you only point your 'evil cruel barbaric' argument at Halal slaughterers, not Kosher ones. The routine is the same, just the rituals are different. To be accurate, you should really be having a go at both.

The last time Halal slaughter was debated on 'The Big Question' (BBC, Sunday mornings, Nicky Campbell hosting), I'm convinced one of the front-row Muslim representatives assured the audience that the animal was stunned first and felt no pain or distress.
The video that dieseldick posted on another thread, earlier this morning showed this not to be the case. Lying to kafirs is permissable, if not recommended, in their holy book, don't forget.

What I object to is not knowing whether the meat I am buying has been slaughtered in a religious fashion. If it has been slaughtered in a religious fashion and the label does not say so, I am unwittingly colluding in this slaughter, and at the same time helping to keep down the price for believers, who otherwise would have to throw away parts of the animal which they can't eat.
