and if not then he would be homeless , right ?

i am from belfast but want to know what way the system works in uk

Have a read of this:

There are links on there to answer all your queries. Hopefully.
You're not homeless, are you? Don't you own a house somewhere? I'm sure you're married, too.
Regarding the Housing Benefit - each area has their own LHA, here is the iist of rates for Portsmouth.

I always thought Belfast was in the UK
:-)

It is. Unless there has been a revolution this afternoon.
But not all laws are the same in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, such as abortion.

I don't know if NI benefits are different.

reason i ask is this, i have a mate lives in folkstone he is on sick and he is approx 40 years old, he told me a few years ago that his one bed flat was getting taken off him as he had lost his job, was now on sickness benefit and housing benefit would only pay around 300 pounds towards his rent, therefore he had to make up a shortfall of around 120 a month from his benefit money but that was only around 75 quid a week. so if men out there are single, the are unemployed , they want a studio or 1 bed flat then how do they pay for it saying the rent per month is around 400 ish pounds per week.

here in NI i know guys who are unemployed and they have reasonably nice flats or houses and benefit pays total amount whatever it is.
ba for old geezer - had to laugh there - but isn't there revolutions here everybloody day LOL.
It's not just single men. It's the same for single women and families.

There is a cap each council are willing to pay.

plus im looking on rightmove at studio and one bed apts and the decent ones are all around 450-550 pcm . so where does that leave a middle aged jobless single guy.

on the street ?
know exactly what you are talking about diesel - next door has 7 grown up children and they are have their own homes the last word - also grand children in Antrim own homes (solar powered) - how how how do they do it.
in shared accomodation
If it helps, in Dover the limit for a one bedroom flat is £373.97 per month
deiesildick; // they have reasonably nice flats or houses and benefit pays total amount whatever it is.//
Correction; 'benefit' doesn't pay for it, we taxpayers pay for it !
Two things really, why do you think you will be sacked. (Have you actually got a job in Portsmouth) if not why don't you just stay in NI where, it seems you will be better off.

ok ummmm fair enough but i still cannot get my head around where a 40 year old unemployed single man or single woman live , look at the price of any studio or 1 bed flat in any city anywhere in mainland uk and they are all around 500 pcm.

you will be better ofrf in belfast - you need to set yourself in Engfland blah blah

bednobs i was thinking that, as all i see is websites like www.spareroom.com and www.easyroom.com . i was renting a dungeon in bootle liverpool last year , double room for 400 pcm . in belfast you would get a reasonably good 1-2 bedroom flat for that.
If thats the case go find a bed and breakfast while you are looking for work.
well stgay here for god's sake.
