Have just received a carpet washer which is beautifully packed with moulded poly styrene and it seems a waste to throw it in the rubbish bin so I would like to know if I should put it in the recycling one?
Our house is in a region where any plastic is accepted for recycling, with only two exceptions: Cling film and metallic/plastic mix-type (usually obviously silver grey or even shiny like chrome on one side and not because it is laminated). Other regions do the same.
Recycling is a process to convert waste materials into reusable material to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from land filling) by reducing the need for "conventional" waste .
Our local council provides us with two types of recycling bin, garden waste and metal/plastic/cardboard
The garden waste gets composted somewhere. They must have a mountain of it by now.
The plastic etc is baled up and shipped out in huge containers. Probably to Manila. I get a sense of all not being right with that.
