Her argument is that foreign cultural attitudes may see a short skirt or a low-cut blouse as an invitation to rape.
Do the clever people who understand modern morality see the difficulty morons like me have in trying to reconcile the apparent contradictions?

However, to examine your question in more detail, maybe the mayoress isn't looking at what's 'right' but simply at what's applicable in the real world?

As an analogy, if you asked me whether young women leaving night-clubs (in the UK) in the early hours of the morning should be TOLD not to wear provocative clothing while walking home alone along dark streets, I'd definitely say 'No'.

However if you asked me whether someone would be wrong to ADVISE them not to do so, then I'd say 'Of course not!'

Perhaps the mayoress is simply offering practical advice, rather than following any particular cultural line?

She surely knows that to tell a woman to do a particular thing will result in her to automatically rebel and do the opposite.

Anyway it's heartening to hear that Germany is getting with the programme. Of course women should be more modest. Nothing less than full burka can ever be acceptable: and women should not leave the house without a male escort to protect them. Just common sense in this modern world.

no, no, no. they are in Germany and should be able to dress as they wish. if in a different country I would expect them to dress differently.

i'm concerned about the new drink guidelines for this country. I don't approve of binge drinking but are the new guidelines for our health or a bow towards a certain religion?

Not wishing to derail VE's thread, but I believe that the guidelines reflect most recent scientific investigation into the effect of alcohol. Culturally we "need" alcohol as a social lubricant, an excuse to get together and enjoy others' company: so we should find our own risk/enjoyment balance.

The mayoress's statement is a bit like saying 'can you try to look a bit less like food' after letting a pride of lions roam the streets. A 'cure' for a problem that really shouldn't exist.

Maybe Germany could divert some of the funds laid aside to look after the dregs seen on their streets over the festive season and issue their female citizens with tasers or even something with a bit more stopping power.
