Several of the beards that were tested contained a lot of normal bacteria, but some were comparable to toilets.
“Those are the types of things you'd find in (fecal matter),” Golobic said, referring to the tests.
Even though some of the bacteria won’t lead to illness, Golobic said it’s still a little concerning.
But for me, it is just a personal appraisal of beards.

My beard is always kept impeccably clean and groomed a few times a day. I also think a lot of this nonsense about faecal matter in beards is most like no more than is what is found on the same peoples skin, some people are just dirty urchins!
I have seen people with filthy beards but rarely, I have seen people with filthy faces very regularly. Its more about good old personal hygiene!

mikey.....interesting question.
Many surgeons do have beards, but of course one does have a mask to cover the greater part of the beard. However, many surgeons including myself believe that would infections have little to do with the operating theatre transmission of infections, most being infected in the wards by grubby fingers poking at the dressings. I went through a period whereby i didn't cover the wounds with dressings and sent them back to the ward "nude" , no dressings on the incisions. The rate of wound infections fell, but the nursing staff and admin were in such a "tizz" that i gave it up.
