What do you believe underpins western societal values?
Whatever it is, if anything, is it the same as underpins your own personal values?

I walked the Camino in Spain a couple of years ago. I came across a town, Castrojerez, that seemed to embody authority. There was a castle on a hilltop(temporal power) A church looming over the village, and then the houses of the poor.
//So pagan Christian or tree huggers the point I am making is a belief in something greater//
NO...The point you were trying to make was that this was a *Christian* country //Look around at all the churches and cathedrals we have//
Stop moving the goalposts. It was obvious from the beginning of this thread that you were trying to get people around to the belief that western values are/were christian values
Your bait is getting thinner, Theland. You need to try harder. Much harder.

Zacs- I draw the line at Karoake.
Otherwise, fair game.
Question Author
No. I asked a question.
Answer it if you like.
And if not, don't. Simples!
Question Author
Nailit - what is your problem? Just give me your take on what underpins societal and personal values in YOUR opinion?
Question Author
Zacs- at 22:26 you said "people would go to hell."
Why would they believe that IF they did not believe in something greater than humankind?
That doesn't make sense.
Treat others as you would like them to treat you. If everyone did that the world would be a peaceful place.
Question Author
In answer to Boaty - Yes I agree.
I guess the majority follow his norms out of societal programming.
But, taking a step back, we must ask, as the philosophers do, by what authority are these norms articulated and become convincingly imperative for the individual and society as a whole?
Without some underpinning, the whole house of cards can and may fall down.
Piece by piece and card by card.
Question Author
I make no apology for my Christian beliefs, and it is these that are the ultimate authority for my life.
Others may disagree and even accuse me and others like me of being some kind of scourge on society.
It has happened before.
But my beliefs are grounded on the solid rock of Jesus Christ, whilst I think that many people have beliefs built on shifting sands, and looking around our society, I see those sands shifting by the day.
Proof?
Look at society twenty years ago, and now.
Do you see a big difference? I do.
Anyway, in friendliness I write this post.
In friendliness, Theland, I understand and support you. :)
Question Author
Thank you jourdain.
//Look at society twenty years ago, and now.
Do you see a big difference//
Anyone can look at 20 yrs ago and see a big difference. Life & times change at a fast pace.
Look at a only 100+ yrs ago when it was deemed acceptable to send children up chimneys and to execute kids for stealing a loaf of bread (and THIS in a 'Christian' country). Not long before that, slavery was acceptable (in a 'Christian' country). Women and gays discriminated against (in a Christian country)

Things change, always have done, always will. Sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better, but the only constant in life is change.
Question Author
Nailit - You wear your heart on your sleeve.
But I have to ask.
Why do you hate Christians so much?
Who said (and why do you assume) that I hate Christians?
One of my closest friends is a retired Pastor.
And why do you completely ignore my post @22:10 and change the subject?
Question Author
Nailit - the whole world 100 years ago was a different place.
What was your,point?
My point is personal and societal morality.
Christians fought against the tide, look at Barnados, anti slavery acts, slow improvements to public health and factory safety.
So what are you saying?
The Christians, (true Christains), stood aside and allowed evil to flourish?
Your constant nit picking and the absence of any constructive suggestions leave me weary.
I need a rest from responding to you for a while.
Doubtless you will enjoy that.
To be fair Theland, I always try to be polite to you and answer your questions, but what Nailit says is true, you are dreadful at answering any questions put to you in the course of the conversation, so the whole thing becomes pointless and loses impetus. x
What Kval ^^ said...
Theland TOTALLY (and wilfully) ignored my posts.
