Not a military man myself, so asking those who are or were, for an opinion.
Am puzzled how infantry with back up, went from Normandy to Berlin, in so short a time, compared to modern battle tactics taking years to flush out an enemy, using indiscriminate chaotic fire power and artillery.
It was the Western Front in World War I that used "battle tactics taking years to flush out an enemy, using indiscriminate chaotic fire power and artillery" and that was 20-odd years before the Normandy landings and race to Berlin in World War II, so not really "modern". Familiarise yourself with actions such as the retaking of the Falkland Islands, invading Kuwait and Iraq (the Gulf Wars) and you'll discover that modern battles can be just as mobile as those of WWII
Every battle situation is different, so tactics vary. For instance, the confrontation in Borneo was very different to the situation in Aden, which was different to the stand off in Cyprus, witch was different to the troubles in Northern Ireland. Each demanding differing tactics. I was involved in all of those.
Boaty what regiment were you in? Jens father was fire officer in RAF his postings were long term, so family travelled with him, so Jen sore many parts of world before she was a teenager
Puzzles me how ISIS held out for so long.
In my INexperience, I would have thought a regiment or two of infantry would have only taken weeks to defeat them.
But I don't know.
That's why I ask.
I think the ISIS thing was slowed up by the cowardly swine surounding themselves with civilians for protection from artillery and other powerful solutions.
We tend not to slaughter innocents in our pursuit of scum as a rule.
Gullible
Do you have a problem with former and current members of the armed forces?
They protect your freedom to wander from your village and spout your inane drivel.
Remember Hitler had a programme to exterminate the feeble minded. Who do you think stopped him? The Brownies or Ovaltinees?
After D-Day plus about 10 the allied advance was seriously stalled by Caen. Operation Epsom or Goodwood.
Likewise Monte Cassino stalled the advance to take the Gustav line.
Got to realise in the !st and 2nd Major World Wars the UK armed forces ,for the most part, faced uniformed opposition with clearly identifiable
vehicles and materiel.
The cowardy opposition who hide behind women and children as human shields in Syria and Iraq wear mufti and use schools and hospitals as fire bases for rockets and mortars etc.
Any mistakes by the goodies and they are hounded by the establishment they serve and scum who call themselves lawyers.
The enemy do not conform to the Geneva Convention, neither Rules of Engagement. To abide by these rules with your hands tied takes time.
John Wayne and Audie Murphy would have taken their troops into battle and fixed the problem pronto.
Big fat Steven Segal would have done it before lunch!
Yes Ok Balders Hands Up.
In the days of conscription I would imagine our heroic gullible would jump at the chance to be a Bevan boy instead. Ideal choice for those with an intellect of a Minor.
