I think in supermarkets there should be a bag recycle scheme where everyone can bring their collection of plastic bags and put them in a metal cage thing near the baskets at the front of the shop. When you go in the shop you can use a community bag rather than buy a new one if you forget your own. Once you gather a small collection of community bags at home you can then take them back to the community bin.

Makes sense to me think I should pitch it to tesco?

My Tesco has been doing that for some years - there is a metal cage at the entrance
Spath just a personal view point, I recycle my own bags, but would never use somebody else's.

Interesting view point tony.. I guess some might be a bit crusty.

All of my bags have only been used once so they're basically brand new but creased :D If i remember my bags it's never the plastic ones but always a bag for ever
Local Morrisons been doing this for years.

Ah this is fantastic to hear that people are saying their locals have been doing this!

I should have a word with my local and get them on the band waggon it seems a good idea in my opinion. Maybe one person to quality control some bags? So the drop off isn't directly into the community bin but instead gets quickly screened by a member of staff.
All the big supermarkets have been doing this for years.

I've personally never seen this implemented in any big store i've been to but i'm glad to know that at peoples locals that it is something done.
Spath you are too late, my local Tesco has had a receptacle for plastic bags for years.
I wouldn't like to use someone else's bag but always take my own. Given that even with re use, plastic carriers have a limited lifespan, should we be using them at all?
And Tesco delivery always took your bags back. They have gone bagless now though.

No we shouldn't be using the mat all really but now they'r emade we might as well because if we don't use them they'll just sit around for ever! Unless they can all be melted down into something more useful and sustainable.

I saw somewhere sainsburys now uses brown paper bags is this correct?
Question Author
People say ditch the plastic it's actually better you keep it and use it to it's fullest because if you ditch it it will then just sit in landfill
ummmm //. They have gone bagless now though.//
Not totally, my frozen articles are still delivered in plastic bags.
My local sainsbury has done it for the last 5 years. I think they recycle them. About the same time they gave out bags for life gratis. I only use our own and when no longer fit for purpose I exchange them for new.
Spath //I saw somewhere sainsburys now uses brown paper bags is this correct?//
Tesco have been using brown paper bags on delivered items for about a year.

I've only ever had food delivered from Morrison.
What, use someone else's dirty bag ? No thanks.
String bags are hardly an 80's thing, we were using them in the 50's, and Morrisons have just started selling them.
