I just don't get it, if you are good at your job you don't need it so clearly it's just a device to protect the terminally she-ite at their jobs. Why would anyone want to do that?

or even join! doh!
Would you rather that the 'terminally she-ite' be sacked and end up on benefits?
Does that include doctors and pilots? Are they in unions? Or do they just have massive insurance premiums?
I think the OP was designed to winkle out Lefties so that the OPer could have a good argument ('argument' in the sense of 'barney' rather than 'intelligent discussion').
if you are good at your job you don't need it

on what planet? People who are good at their jobs are sacked all the time.
The power of the many is usually greater than the power of the one.
You might be the greatest worker in the country, but if you employer is a cock, they will mistreat you and there is nothing you can do about (except sack yourself).
Some professions don’t need a Union, and if you are lucky enough to be in that position, good for you. But in some professions, and with some employers, it is necessary, and justified.
Husband was a joiner preretirement. His company was asked to fix ceilings in factory offices. Husband turns up and was refused entry because he wasn't in any union. He toddled off and joined the lollipop union, returns to carpet factory and fixed office ceiling. He was both bemused and amused plus slightly puffed at the stupidity
Alba; amusing, but not really a good reason to be against the principle of trade unions.
In private sector i'd largely agree with you... my wifes private employer dont even reconise unions and just says 'take it or leave it''' its all we can afford, the doors open if you dont like it, and my company have give us under 5% even with a union because people cant afford to strike or risk job losses or unpaid leave.... but public sector unions beleive that goverment has a bottomless purse and can always afford more through taxes
Elon Musk has just sacked 75% of Twitters workforce most of them coders and network administrators like you.
Do you really believe that the platform of 200 Million plus daily users actually had 75% of its employees were shi-ite at their jobs ?

gromit:"You might be the greatest worker in the country, but if you employer is a cock, they will mistreat you and there is nothing you can do about (except sack yourself). " - yes you can leave and get a better job. I've been to many interviews but I'm interviewing them not the other way round. if you are any good you can do that. Unions exist so that people who are carp at their jobs can get jobs.
were the twitter people in unions gromit, I dont know but am wandering.
I dont think Twitter staff would have seen it as a job for life though unlike many in public services...
If only we were so fortunate! What a plonker!

gromit: "Elon Musk has just sacked 75% of Twitters workforce most of them coders and network administrators like you. " - how little you understand the world if IT, I am not a coder, I hate coders. I am an old school programmer, if that confuses you then do some learning.
Anyone have an idea about the pilots and doctors?
Ooops! Predictive text! I didn't want to write 'plonker', I wanted to write "sensitive fellow with a heart of gold as well as a profound understanding of his fellow men and the delicate and sometimes difficult relationship between 'self' and 'other'".

Musk has fired a lot of programmers on a whim. Because he is not a good employer. Their skills didn’t save them.

yeah fine but they can get other jobs.
You are missing the point, by a few parsecs :-)
