Sailing Crew.

My house mate has talked me in to joining up with crew on a sailing boat.

I have absolutely no experience of this (although I like being on boats) and I've been told by the captain/skipper/bloke who's boat it is that he has wet weather gear. But I don't know what 'wet weather gear' is or what I shold wear when I go.

Do you think jeans and a warm top would be ok? Should I buy wellies?

Oh I love sailing, you lucky thing. I am a day skipper. When are you going? Is it racing or just cruising? On the sea, or river? Where?

Jeans are fine, but something like combats/light �chino type� trousers are better. Basically anything that can dry out quickly � jeans have a tendency to get wet and thus chafing! But if you are going soon you need to remember it might be freezing out on the water, so go for warmth and comfort rather than any fashion consideration. Woolly jumpers ahoy. You shouldn�t really need wellies, go for cheapish light shoes like trainers or loafers which again are easier to dry out.

Wet weather gear is generally the final layer and should be a sailing jacket with a hood, and waterproof trousers � very fetching, but they do the job. With you on board there should be plenty of wind so enjoy it.

depends partly on whether it's the Caribbean or the North Sea, July or December. But yes, get stuff that dries quickly - I like Rohan clothes myself

If at sea for a while, you may be able to spear walruses and knit yourself garments from the skins

Octavius - Gosport is where I'm going. Provided the person in question proves we're not about to do a rendition of Dead Calm and I prove I'm not the police. (I blame my housemate for signing me up for things where I had no voice to refuse!)

Make sure you have a single fare home and you know where the stations are. There is one at Gosport


And then I thought it cant be that bad and tried it again in 1985....and I would wear your chinos over your head. It was just purgatory. I agree that a lot of it was my fault.
