Hi Boo,
I always reckon on an average of about four to see it through, mind you, I don't have a dog, so this year possibly three.
I've got two - so I'm putting money in boxes without taking a poppy. The same old soldier is at our Tescos every year - and I just can't resist him - or any of the others. Give generously folks - this really is a magnificent cause. We, who have never experienced the horrors of war, are the lucky ones. We're living a life of relative ease, and we should be eternally grateful to those who gave their lives for our freedom - let us never forget them.

And, although I don't believe in the Biblical God, God help anyone who contradicts me!!
Agreeing with ya once again Naomi :-)
Hi Lonnie - have answered on your other thread here:

The more the merrier eh? -xx-
lonnie anyone that walks past these people without putting a few pence in the box ,should feel ashamed
Hi again mucker,
I've answered your post in B+S, just thought I'd tell you that I've emailed rthe AB Ed asking for a Military catagory and she gave me some positive feedback, so, fingers crossed eh?
We have a ride out and a minutes silence and give the money direct to the local legion.
Isn't this political correctness.

I might not think this is a good charity.

I might think that governments that ask people to go and kill other people for it's own political ends ought to look after them without appealing to the public for aid and giving it respectability with solemn ceremonies.

But it seems I'm not allowed to think such things, I'm not allowed to hold such opinions without people like shanx telling me I must be ashamed.

I dare say he'd tell me of "all the people who died for me"

Seems to me it's political correctness gone mad

If it's all the same to you I'll save my money another few days "for Children in need"
So you would rather give money to a load of swindlers in Africa than help out old boys who had to go and fight?

Each to thier own. jake-the-peg,
no-one wants to tell you how to spend your money, or which good causes should benefit, however as I read your very valid points, I thought of a saying/phrase that our American friends love to quote, it goes:

If you are reading this, thank a teacher,
If you are reading this in English, thank a soldier.

The poppy is a visible sign of the sacrifice others made, and are still making, and that people who have, and have not been in the services appreciate that sacrifice.

Go and thank a soldier
Well spoken, naomi. And a very fine sense of gratitude from most of the rest of you.
But, of course, jake-the-peg is entitled to his point of view. If he thinks it would have been better (for example) to let the Nazis take over the whole of Europe (and then certainly Africa and most other countries) so that we would all now be living in the Third Reich with all that involves, he is entitled to feel that way.
But there we are: a lot of men and women died to prevent such a horror coming about and I, for one, feel that they should be remembered.
The bulk of those old boys didnt have a choice in the matter. It was go to war or stop at home and become a leper.

Oooohhhh lets give more money to Africa because they spend it so wisely and the situation has changed so dramatically in the last 25 years hasn't it?
I always want to cry when I see old men sitting in wheelchairs with their box of poppies and their collection box. I bought one the other day and as I put my money in the box he said Thank you. I really wanted to put my arms round him and say Thank YOU.
I wish they would make small enamel pin badges in the shape of a poppy. I collect them and I would love a poppy one. Though I suppose people would just bring them out every year instead of wearing a paper one.
Those old boys went through hell to fight for this country and if someone finds in politically incorrect to try and help them then I suggest they have a serious look at themselves.
I agree Reverandfunk, what really upsets me is when you read about these poor old men that have been mugged, beaten up or killed by the nasty lowlifes in this country who don't give a damn what these men have been through. Shame we don't just send this sort of scum to war instead of paying them to do nothing except smoke, drink, take drugs and murder. God. I get so angry !!!!!!!

i was a soldier, and believe me, I wouldn't want one of those you mentioned to be under my command, I wouldn't trust them to look after their friends or me
I am a firm believer in look after your first.

Ive got a mate who served in the marines in the falklands and we occassionaly go with him to his local rememberence day parade. i get a lump in my throat.
And should I thank you 4GS for bayonetting Iraqi teenage conscripts?

Would I otherwise be speaking Iraqi?

Did those who fought in Suez 50 years ago save me from speaking Egyptian?

Don't get me wrong we have a commitment to old soldiers - especially those called up against their will - but that commitment was made by the state and should be honoured by the state.

The state asked you to fight - not me
