It's common to see detrimental remarks on this site about the Telegraph and the Daily Mail (and those who read them), so what is the most widely read newspaper amongst ABers?
I hate all the British dailies. They're so freaking partisan it's almost unbelievable. (Well, the only one I haven't read for a few weeks at some point is the Financial Times, so I can't comment there)
Personally, I stick to the Economist every week (which for some reason calls itself a newspaper). I also get a daily newsletter from the Washington Post, and for specific issues I look at different think-tanks (so for foreign affairs, I look at the Brookings Institute, for economics I look at the Adam Smith institute and a few others to balance out.)
Disadvantage is that this results in me spending an uncomfortable amount of time reading off of the computer.
I don't read any papers either, they all, lets say, distort the truth in order to increase sales, all down to money at the end of the day, sensational headlines about so called celebrities,
Good example Ethel, that would sell though wouldn't it
I naomi,
I generally read the 'Mail', as I think its about the best tabloid, also a quick read, as i don't have that much time, if my daughters in respite, I treat myself and buy the 'Independant'.
I don't buy a newspaper either, but read the news online every morning. I use google news, which gives me the option of reading the same story from various newspapers, mostly the ones Fay has listed.
I read the Guardian, well aware of the left wing bias, after all its a paper purportedly for the "Labour-voting middle-class reader with centre-left/left-wing politics rooted in the 1960s, working in the public sector or academia, sometimes eating lentils and muesli", which sums me up exactly.
I use the BBC website for news coverage as well.
When visiting or having relatives to stay, I read the Telegraph and the Daily Mail - just to keep the balance.
spreading a newspaper over the desk and putting your feet up with a cup of tea in the workplace is unnaceptable. However, frittering your time away online is OK.
I read The Independent during the week and The Times on Saturdays. Don't bother with sunday papers - I generally save part of saturdays.
I used to read the Mail years back (I am ashamed to admit!) but got sick to death of the their constant tirades.
I only buy a paper on the days when I'm working, i.e. Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday usually. The one I like best is The Times. They have some great writers, good puzzles, and their coverage of sport is second to none.
Politically, the Sun is as right-wing as any. The Grauniad Ive never bought, merely scrounged a copy sometimes because it has a very challenging cryptic crossword. Never read the Telegraph. As for the Mail I rarely buy it, but I tend to agree with their point of view. The Express I often buy on Sundays, but only for the puzzles.
The first person to accuse me of being a Fascist wins a coconut!
