Songs that typify England
27 Answers
I'm organising an 'England' theme fundraising evening and I'm looking for songs that people can sing along with. I've got the songs from Last Night of the Proms, but I would like other well-known songs from any era. I want to keep it lively, so 'Greensleeves' is definitely out. I've thought of 'Roll out the Barrel', and The Beatles 'When I'm 64', but now I'm stuck, so any suggestions will be very welcome. Thank you.

Elgar's 'Nimrod' and 'Salut d'Amour'.
Anything well-known by Gilbert and Sullivan.
Any marches by Eric Coates - Dambusters, Knightsbridge etc. - or Kenneth Alford - Colonel Bogey, Thin Red Line etc.
You could also look for some traditional brass band music, a la 'Brassed Off' - always stirring stuff, that.
