Hi -
I am a full time student, all i get is the government bursary; i have no other income. (believe me, im job hunting like crazy) But anyway, i really want to propose to my girlfriend; we have been talking about it for ages, the problem is, i cant afford an expensive ring! £100 is like my limit...
I've seen a nice ring in H Samual for £70, white gold but cubic zerconian stone

Should i wait till i can afford a more expensive ring?
She says that she wouldnt mind if i proposed to her with a gummy ring; but my friends all disagree and say that the ring does matter, i should wait. They also say im proposing too soon to her, because im at uni - i should wait till im finished with uni (3 more years)
Any advice is appreciated
Thanks
Jp

I agree Lofty x
Firstly - no-one talked about size.
Secondly - I agree with you Redhelen, 'you should get engaged because you love the person' - that would really help the relationship.
And how would an expensive ring help the relationship Seadragon?

Thanks all, you've lifted my mood :)
Im going to do it next month :D
An engagement ring is a profound symbol of committment (enforced by the wedding ring) of one person to another. It is an object imbued with significance about each other, the past and particular the future. Some people may end up broke and sell alot of things but how many could part from their engagement ring? I could part from my wedding ring if the marriage went wrong but not from my engagement ring as that represents all the girlish dreams and fantasies of a happy life once envisaged with that person.

I don't think that is a shallow thought.
Brilliant jp! :0)
I haven't got a wedding ring any more. Still married though!! I have kept a ring my son made me when he was three. He made it from a Quality Street wrapper!!

It is up to you. You know the relationship with your girlfriend and more importantly you have differenting opinions from your friends, myself and many others on Answerbank. I wish you and your girlfriend all the best for the future.
Well done jp. Can we come to the celebration party?

Get back to your studies!
Aww lofty! I have a curly blonde lock of hair from my son somewhere!
How old is he now Sachs?
22 ! :0)
Mine is coming up to 27!! :o)
and I still have all his little milk teeth!!
& how old is your son lofty?
i would tend to agree with seadragon. you people are either in a different social strata or are showing your age - and please, i mean no offence by that.

most of the women i know think that the ring is very important, and the damond must have lots of carats, have the right cut, and be set on a platinum ring. this aint cheap. of course this is shallow, but this is what you get from a material society. i do detest this sort of person, but they exist. they are everrwhere.

jp - go with the flow and what you can afford. if this isn't good enough for the woman in your life, then perhaps she is not good enough for you.
What sort of social strata am I in Ankou. I am just an elderly ex flower power child! I really do not crave material things. So I mix with the same sort of people. Birds of a feather and all that :o)

Are us older ones less materialistic do you think? I personally think we are. Glad I was young back in the 60s/70s (and even 50s :o()
Ankou, I think it's o.k, jp's girlfriend would wear a Gummi ring! I probably am of a certain age & no offence taken! x
ah, so both showing yer age then !

yes i think people of a.... certain... generation were much less materialistic.

well she said that she wouldn't mind if he proposed with a gummy ring, but one wonders if this would be folllowed by 'but its temporary right? and in a few years you'll buy me a proper 10 carat one right, princess cut and platnum like whats in tiffneys, yeah?'
Just thinking about it Ankou, my son and his partner are even less materialistic than I am.
