jayne - i agree. those who think the planet is a few thousand years old or that the untested word must be adhered to are barmy. it's like my mum used to say to me: if someone told you to jump off a cliff would you do it? a bit of common sense is all that is required to pick holes in most religious perspectives. sad...

Haaaa! Why don't you say it like it is, Stonekicker! Love it!

Great - but I think you should have added another 6 to the end when you changed your name. ;o)
naomi - as i have always believed and said: a spade is a spade. don't call it a fork, shovel or anything else. i get quite irate when religious discussion comes up on ab - comes from sitting in church for 16 years and attending a religious school. need i say ANYTHING else? there are more pressing things afoot than religion and belief - like the bloomin' election tomorrow. please don't vote tory. i won't get a pay rise next year! x

Interesting thought, stonekicker.

Is there any correlation between being made to sit through religious services ...

... and becoming cynical about institutionalised religion?

I was sent away to boarding school ("sent away" in a nice way, of course), and we began every single day of our school life with a service in chapel. I doubt if many of us came away being adherents to organized worship.
indeed, jayne. i think the problem with religion is that there is very little room for individuality and control of thought. both of which i had huge problems with at school. i used to love going up to the nuns and shouting naughty words...just to see the looks on their faces. was irresistible. at times, i used to have to sit on my hands or cover my mouth during assembly to stop myself having an outburst. maybe i have tourettes? have just picked up a six month 'improvement' notice from work for telling a colleague to fuff off after she screamed at another member of staff. of course, i'm the one who needs to apologise...x
Stoney ... you rebel !!!

always been a rebel and always will. got my first tattoos and piercings this year (i'm 34). always wanted them, but felt forced to 'conform' for professional purposes as i am a nurse. never give into my principles for the sake of others, am true to myself and do and say what i want to after a lifetime of not being able to. love it. would be very sad not to be able to express myself openly - this site is a perfect example. have read many of your posts and admire you tremendously. you strike me as a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants....and i aspire to that. think how scary that must be for some people, eh? x
The problem with teaching religion in schools is that you are teaching 2+2=4 and God made the world. One is fact the other is belief - you cannot teach belief and no one should try!
Aww, thanks stoney ... x

Karen ... I wonder how, in principle, one could separate teaching a mere belief, from ...

... "brainwashing" ?

The only difference seems to be "good stuff" or "bad stuff"

But that leaves you in a whole blurry area of subjectivity.
BTW stoney ...

As my current Avatar is a picture of Amanda Knox, does that make me a teensy bit of a rebel too ?
