Is shaking (no) and nodding (yes) your head usual with most human societies?

It's usual but not universal. I believe Bulgarians, for example, nod for no.

No, some cultures wag their heads to agree with you. Different cultures, different ways of communicating, the same - very much - with hand gestures. What's in daily use here can be very insulting in other cultures.

It can be awkward - like the time I was approached by a Bulgarian prostitute. I can laugh about it now of course.

Here in Greece "No" is usually indicated by a minuscule (sometimes undetectable) upward jerk of the head (or just the eyebrows), and a faint tut.
