Without knowing how the 'experts' have reached this figure, I expect it's the accumulated proportions of the cooks, educators, social workers, reintegration specialists, psychologists, doctors, screws, drug-sniffing dogs, and librarians that they have plus people to maintain the buildings.
3 x 8 hour shifts of prison officers per 24 hours, heating, fuel, food, education, counsellors, admin staff, security costs, I'm sure the list could go on and on..
i realise there are lots of overheads to take into consideration, and not every prisioner will have that amount of money spent on them. but id be interested to know how much it costs to keep a patient in a hospital, ?
Keeping a patient in hospital will have varied costs depending on the kind of care the pateint needs and their length of stay and equipment that needs to be used etc...
remember reading in some country,,,, France?? Prisoners do real jobs inside ie chefs painters sparks etc etc get paid proper wage but then pay proper dig money, saves on wages for civilian staff to come in, keeps the inmates occupied ...seems a god idea to me to keep costs down !
I've never understood that either Anne - but I have worked with the public sector and with major charities - and the waste and the abuse of the public's money is phenomenal!
I've seen some photos of the fully equipped gymnasiums they have in some prisons, they must cost a few thousand to fit out. They have better facilities than someone has outside.
We need to put all the dependent pensioners in prison, and put the criminals in the Pension homes. The oldies will at least get a good quality of life and the villains get cr@p to eat.
When you take in the cost of Sky TV for every cell, food, pool tables, gyms, medical expenditures, drug therapy, work shops etc its no wonder its so expensive!!!
