Slightly off subject but :

Aye I think that every time I hear someone say words to the affect of, "It's the law/rules so you have to obey it, or it will be anarchy". Folk need to think for themselves and listen to their "internal moral compass". Not act like sheep.

However we must be careful about the "internal moral compass". Religious faiths tell us to rely on that intuitive part while thay wave magnets under the table if you get my drift.

We must be aware of and understand the underlying beliefs and experiences that shape our concepts of morality. Research has shown that generally the individual's interpretation of religious edicts closely matches their personal beliefs. It is too easy to be lazy and incite God as the authority.

I do not deny that there is much worthy advice also contained in the Bible and in some parts it does touch upon the idea of personal responsibility.

However it is fundamentally flawed in that it promotes the practice if unwavering and unquestioning faith in what it claims as inexorable truths. There is no better example than those who followed Joshua with their swords in the name of God which is why I take such issue with that particular aspect,

We know in modern society that this style of philosophy has a tendency to become stuck in the prejudices of the status quo.

We need to think and be able to consciously adapt our values especially as we race along at the pace of the 21st century. Books written for a thousand years ago are not a source of salvation for sophisticated human beings. Why would anyone expect them to be?

So is Britain fundamentally flawed? The history there is full of conquest by genocide. If I tell that story does it apply today? Does it justify anything? No. Its history. Could the history of Britain be told without talking about Empire? Could somebody look at the UK and see justification for genocide? Or for taking what you want for profit? I could argue that the god of the atheist is money but I don't. Profit is much more likely than altruism when discussing the Empire. The book has been held up for justification. Lots of books have. Some people don't even need books.
