I would just like to know how much the very large candles in a church cost. There are some very big ones with Christian symbols on them, but these have never been seen in any normal shop. Where do they come from, and how much do they cost? Do they have to be blessed before they are used in a church? I would like to know as I usually light the Easter candle in our church.

Hi Johnny, when my grandson was Christened I found a site online that put the date , the Church and his name on the pillar candle, I was very impressed with them, I ordered a dozens as gifts for close family and friends, there are quite a few of these sites now I believe

You can buy big 'church candles' at our local garden centre...they cost a bomb though. No idea if church ones have to be blessed though I can't see any reason why they would be.

I think what you are describing is the "Pascal Candle" which is blessed at Easter. In the Catholic Church it is blessed and lit from the new fire at the Easter vigil on Holy Saturday night. The priest inserts five grains of incense in the form of a Cross and seals them with brass studs. These represent the five wounds of Christ. He then engaves an Alpha at the top of the cross and an omega at the bottom with a stylus and the current year in the corners of the cross. It is lit at all Masses from Easter until Pentecost and represents Christ, the Light of the World. After this it is lit for all baptisms and Requiem (funeral Masses) until the following Easter.
