Why are the religious so afraid of death?

Without the concept that by worshiping an invisible man in the sky, people can somehow avoid the inevitable, religion would be surplus to requirements.

We're all going to die eventually, we won't know anything about it, so what's the problem?

I think you have it wrong steg. I have no issue with a sensible religious debate, founded on fact, philospophy and reasoning. The problem comes when you get folk, in this case the ijiots such as the "Unholy Trinity" trying to manipulate their arguments and beliefs onto folk, dogmatically - partly as they are obliged to do so, and frequently set to "targets," by outfits like JWs and Christadelphians.

They distort history, reason and even corrupt the Biblle and other texts, (I personally have quoted back at them the proper text from the Book) and are almost rather sanctamonious and unabashed about doing it. They also duck under answering the truth.

In short, they are a disgrace to Christianity and, dare I say it, they destroy other Christians validity, esp on a site like this.

I have no issue with true Christians (each to his own as an inspirational div- teacher conveyed to me - see different thread) and, living close to a cathedral, I do know a lot of "good" folk.

These so-called Christians that we see on here (even to the point that they duplicate their names) get up my right nostril...and many others. They deserved to be challenged by Aetheists, Agnostics and true Christians, as well as those of other beliefs.

AYG, most atheists understand that truth is a hard won thing. The 'truths' that underpin the progress of the modern world and enable the technology that makes our lives so much more convenient and healthy were obtained by the hard work of rational people using logic and scientific discipline. Inventing 'facts' to justify beliefs and twisting logic to deceive simple minded or uneducated people is dishonest and shameful and is the domain of charlatans, politicians and conmen. If you think that belief contributes anything to progress then you are a victim of the aforementioned cheats and liars.

Gran, it's the same old thing. Religion resorts to attacking the messenger because it has no defence against the message. Unfortunately for religion the unbelievers here aren't empty vessels, as you claim. They know the scriptures as well as anyone of religion, and in many cases, rather better, which is often the precise reason they have reached their conclusions. It might go against the grain for you to acknowledge the truth, but as far as I'm aware there has not been one single discussion on these pages in which believers have offered a convincing argument. If you have one, and if you want to tell us exactly why it is puffed-up nonsense and twisted logic, I've no doubt that everyone here will be very willing to listen.

AYG..the point that I was making and which you have chosen to ignore or failed to understand is that the very fact that science has enabled man to walk on the moon, eradicate smallpox and observe the further reaches of the universe, demonstrates that logic works on any scale (so far). If religious belief has achieved as much as 1% of this for the greater wellbeing and understanding of mankind then then perhaps it is not just the 'opiate of the masses'. Devoting your life to trying to comprehend the incoherent and ambiguous writings of a bunch of narrow minded and self serving 'scholars' is never going to achieve anything other than disagreement and ignorance.
