I do not know why anyone converts to Islam, except they are deluded, misguided individuals who cannot cope without someone telling them how to live their life. And i do feel the same about all religions, so not singling out one religion, but all.
then it's a pity that all you see on the news are more bombings, killings, and not just US, British soldiers killing insurgents, or indeed Afghani people, but Muslim against Muslim, One sect against another, and quite honestly i cannot understand any religion that condones female circumcision, stoning women for adultery, honour killings and any number of mind numbing backward thinking ways to harm women, Add in being against homosexuality, that's another reason.
Whether any of these things are in fact part of the Koran, I see Islam as a dangerous religion, and one that is spreading it's tentacles around the globe.

Why any intelligent, self-sufficient human being would convert to Islam, or to any other religion, is a mystery to me, but I do wish people would stop making excuses for the atrocities perpetrated under its banner – whether that be child abuse, female subjugation, or terrorism. The fact is Islamic literature is contradictory and these people, whether they live peaceably or otherwise, have no difficulty in justifying their lifestyle or their actions through that literature. Of the passengers aboard the planes that were hijacked on 9/11, there were none so devout as the hijackers.
Sith – Reasons are very very simple. In fact there is only one single reason. Since 9/11 people has started reading about Islam themselves instead of relying on centuries old cooked stories during crusades and depending upon few anti Islamic websites. Once they study about Islam then they find out that this is the only way forward. That is the main reason majority of the converts give. And then because of the media (especially internet) the access to knowledge and comparing has become easy. Otherwise for centuries Christian missionaries have been (and still are) super active but you would hardly see any Muslims preaching anywhere. Only last week I was reading a thread here where the poster (living in this country I suppose) in this age did not know that Muslims (or Islam) is a religion.
Naomi - by the way its not you in this news? are you ? Because she said your favourite phrase.

Sorry Sith, I am not trying to change the subject here but I saw something in the news and Naomi came to my mind.

Make no mistake. Islam is a way backwards. It is nothing but primitive fascism.
The furture success of humanity depends on religion being thoroughly exposed for what it is. Religion is doomed in societies where murder is no longer allowed as a punishment for heresy. Theocracies know this hence continue the brutal supression of all dissent.
