Circumcisions in Germany

It is now illegal in Germany to perform circumcisions for purely religious reasons. This has caused the normally fractious relationship between the Jewish and Islamic religions to be temporarily put on hold and a tenuous coalition formed on this issue.

Apart from the simple and obvious fact that it is profoundly wrong to slice a piece of flesh from a baby because of tradition and/or religious dogma, is this temporary coalition between these two faiths a nauseating example of religious hypocrisy?

Katiekonker -

I'm not taking the p*ss.

The Germans have just introduced a law onto their statute books that make the practise of circumcision of babies (for non-medical reasons) illegal. This is not a trivial matter nor has it appeared out of thin air. It has been born from a genuine concern for the welfare of children and as been discussed at the highest level of government.
What about female circumcision? They say circumcising males enhances sexual pleasure but it's the exact opposite for women.

Ummmm -

Female circumcision... that gets me even more angry than the male version of this barbaric practise.

Katiekonker - “... surely we all feel helpless...”

We're all helpless if we do nothing and keep silent. Anyway – bedtime for me. I'm going to sleep on the e-petition thing.
I can't get my head round it.
Night birdie. It's a good idea.

katiekonker, did you bother to read my link?

Jews and Muslims will be able to have their baby boys circumcised for religious reasons in Germany. Merkel has guaranteed it.

//is this temporary coalition between these two faiths a nauseating example of religious hypocrisy? //

Yes, but it happens all the time - on AB too. Religion supports religion - when it suits it to.
Even some quite unlikely combinations.

mibn2cwus - that is a highly offensive and racist remark. I've reported it.
My Aussie mate told me that the vast majority of male Australians are circumcised (and she should know)
//mibn2cwus - that is a highly offensive and racist remark. I've reported it.//

hc4361 - Thanks for the heads up, alerting me to the possible need to issue the following clarification regarding my remark.

I don't know (or care to know) which race you imagine my remark was in reference to, but to my knowledge, the practice to which this thread refers is not a racial practice but rather a religious or culturally inspired tradition for which the individuals who choose to participate are personally responsible. My remark was not aimed at any race in particular but rather towards those who, in lieu of medical necessity, prescribe and participate in this highly offensive (to put it mildly) brutal act against their fellow human beings . . . should one insist upon inferring its practitioners as representative of and qualifying members of the human race.

That said, on behalf of anyone who prefers that my previous remark be removed, such would be done with my blessing.
hc4361, racist? Confusion reigns!
//Confusion reigns!//

Perhaps then I should be crowned King Mibn2cweus! ;o)
Umm, //They say circumcising males enhances sexual pleasure // I don't know who says that but I can't see how removing part of the penis along with perhaps thousands of nerve endings and causing the glans to become calloused over so that it much less sensitive could contribute to increasing sexual pleasure. Since circumcised men and non-circumcised men can have no idea how much pleasure the other gets from sex we can only speculate on the merits or otherwise of circumcision. Not having been circumcised myself I can't imagine how anyone who has been circumcised puts up with the inconvenience but perhaps the desensitisation that results make it tolerable.
That's not a bad idea! :o)
