Circumcisions in Germany
63 Answers
It is now illegal in Germany to perform circumcisions for purely religious reasons. This has caused the normally fractious relationship between the Jewish and Islamic religions to be temporarily put on hold and a tenuous coalition formed on this issue.

Apart from the simple and obvious fact that it is profoundly wrong to slice a piece of flesh from a baby because of tradition and/or religious dogma, is this temporary coalition between these two faiths a nauseating example of religious hypocrisy?

It looks as if Angela Merkel wants to overturn the ban..

I posted links on pages 1 and 2 of this thread that states Merkel is not banning the circumcision of baby boys for religious reasons.

//Many Jews consider themselves to belong to the Jewish nation or race.//
It's a shame all people don't aspire to simply being human. Individuals who define themselves based on their genetic heritage (an accident of birth over which none of us have a choice or any control) . . . that's the root of racism.

Hc4361 - “Many Jews consider themselves to belong to the Jewish nation or race.”
Indeed they do and I believe them to be mistaken.
To reiterate what I have said about this matter on a previous thread, “... I would argue that it is impossible to change your 'race'. However, it is possible to change your religion so I suggest that Jewish people are a religious community rather than a race (as are Hindus, Muslims, Christians, etc.)... Since people who have no discernible Jewish lineage can (under certain conditions) become Jewish, surely this disproves the idea that the Jews are a distinct race...”

The many Jews that can trace their ancestry (and there are many) consider themselves to be a unique race.
In any case discrimination applies not only to race but to creed, gender, sexual preference and disability.
It is equally offensive to wish all Muslims dead as it is to wish all Swedes dead (as examples).

I've never understood the reasoning behind the religious practise of circumcision. If God made man in His own image then by deliberately slicing off a piece of His creation they're effectively saying that they think God's creation isn't quite good enough and can be improved upon by removing some element of it. The arrogance and inverted logic of that notion is quite breathtaking coming as it does from people who normally sing God's praises and speak about His infallibility and the beauty of His creations.
I fully understand the need for circumcision if there is a medical necessity but to arbitrarily cut off a person's foreskin makes no more sense than it does to cut off a person's earlobes. I accept that blokes don't *need* a foreskin but then again, they don't *need* earlobes either. So why don't we remove those too?

It's in the Torah:
Genesis 17: 9-14 Abraham was commanded by God to circumcise himself, all male members of his household, his descendants and slaves in an everlasting covenant.
Genesis 16:14 Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreksin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."

Yes I know. That still does not make them a 'race' in any meaningful sense. There are black African Jews too – they consider themselves to be part of the Jewish 'race' just as much as their Caucasian peers.

It starts to become farcical when we describe people who hold the same beliefs as a 'race' when those people are made up of both Caucasian and Negroid (and no doubt other) anthropological types.
