Because they're human. Humans like the idea of a supreme being guiding the world. As to the origins of the universe, the scientists can always say that a supreme being initiated the big bang.

I don’t know – but I do know it’s irrational to attribute the unknown to the unknown - and if they are truly scientists, so should they.

I would suspect a large proportion of them are.Studies of religiosity have demonstrated that there is an inverse relationship between religion and scientific education - That is to say, the more scientific education you have the less likely it is you will be religious.

A recent survey of The US National Academy of Sciences found that, of all who responded, only around 10-20% were religious. which is a significantly lower proportion than in the general population.

This is just one of the biggest and most egregious falsehoods I have seen posted here. All the evidence shows otherwise. Those that attempt to demonstrate the amazingly prophetic scientific knowledge contained with the koran lie and dissemble in a pathetically transparent fashion in the vain attempt to convince believers that their book of myth still has some relevance. They fail, miserably.

Its a platitude, it seems -A JW criticizing "regular" christians, claiming they are are all atheists except for a fleeting moment on a Sunday. If they were all atheists all of the time, joining together to reinforce community bonds and have a nice time, rather than reinforcing the rituals and beliefs of an irrelevance, the world would be a far better place..

Anyone who has been brainwashed into religion as a child, and later starts to sense the irrationality of it, has to fight a fierce battle to shuffle off the brainwashing. I know because I went through it some decades ago and the relief and intellectual freedom I felt when I had won the battle showed just how immensely strong that early indoctrination had been.

Even some scientists can't manage it. As such they have to compartmentalise, using science in their jobs and reverting to religion at home. Read "in six days" (yes, lower case) edited by John F Ashton PhD, a collection of 50 essays by scientists each of whom believes that the universe was created by God in six 24-hour days just as in Genesis. The muddles they get into are sometimes risible.

Have you managed to win the battle against the sale of homeopathic medicine in pharmacies or is it still on? Sometime I do wonder what would happen to the society if someone so committed like you would stop battling for the better future of what should and should not be sold in a pharmacy!

Some scientists work in areas where there is no immediate intellectual conflictwith religious dogma. They can survive without having to be obvious schiziophrenics. Those who do conflict wth religious dogma usually follow the path of rationality. Anyone can devise and execute simple experiments that demonstrate the power of logic. No one has ever demonstrated the 'power of god'
