Because through the pages of the Bible he speaks to you.

He tells you what he has done in times past and what he has purposed to do in the future.

He gives you sound counsel and wise instruction for guiding you in the way that is best for you.

Since he is far wiser than any human, what he says is worthy of your attention.

If you listen to him, his written Word can be for you a book of life.

“For all things that were written aforetime were written for our instruction, that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope.”—Rom. 15:4

Naomi@ As per usual you twist words. I am not doubting that she wrote what she believes to be true. Over the years I have found that many people convince themselves that certain things are true. But in many instances it is a case of "Chinese whispers". I have spoken with many who have said things were true, but on further discussion found that it was hearsay and...

If you were to celebrate it, I'd say "Merry Christmas, Goodlife!"
Merry Christmas goodlife: you can take the rest of the day off
..because we will
Well, Dumbledore speaks to me through the pages of Harry Potter. He tells of his past and what may happen in the future. He gives sound counsel and wise instruction. Of course, he is far wiser than any muggle.

"It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live. Remember that." - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone.
And so say the Hindus ,the Sikhs. the Muslims, the Animists ,the Pagans etc etc etc . Do you believe in them All ?
A book of life?

The one that says kill people that don't listen to priests?

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

The one that says kill homosexuals?

"If a man lies with a male as with a women, both of them shall be put to death for their abominable deed; they have forfeited their lives." (Leviticus 20:13 NAB)

The one that says kill adulterers?

If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, both the man and the woman must be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10 NLT)

There's an awful lot of killing in this "book of life" don't you think?
I got a fantastic book on science as an attendance prize at Sunday school, when I was about seven.

Does that count as a reward for studying god's word?

(I was the only kid in primary school who could quote Boyle's law of gases)
Jake-the-peg, you are quoting scriptures from the Old Testament. The New Testament speaks of forgiveness through Jesus. Apart from that, those verses spoke of sinning not just killing because you dont like the person or religion.

How many people have to die? How many deaths do you need? Give us the threshold of death that you need in order to believe that this is happening.”

Throughout the world, 40 million people are infected with HIV, 20 million have died from AIDS, and 750 000 babies are born with HIV infection every year,” reports a Britain’s medical journal. In the year 2001 alone, there were five million new infections and three million deaths due to AIDS. According executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, the epidemic is “out of control,” yet still in its “early stages.” He estimates that in the next 20 years, 70 million people will die from AIDS. In sub-Saharan Africa, between 30 and 50 percent of the population in some cities is HIV-positive. With so many young adults dying of AIDS, the worry is that by 2020, over 25 percent of the work force will be lost. “The effects on children have the most important implications for future.

Obviously, the Israelites appreciate that law from Jehovah. And when Moses came down to the people after receiving the law at the hands of angels he said- These are the words that you are to say to the sons of Israel.” 7 So Moses came and called the older men of the people and set before them all these words that Jehovah had commanded him. 8 After that all the people answered unanimously and said: “All that Jehovah has spoken we are willing to do.”-Ex 19:6-8

Does God give a law to a people and then do away with it, abrogate it? Yes, as the Supreme Lawgiver he can make whatever laws he wishes for his creatures and cancel them when they have served his purpose, replacing them with other laws or rules of conduct. For example, polygamy was permitted under the Mosaic law and Levirate marriage was compulsory, but neither of these applies to true Christians. That is why Paul also says: “The Law has become our tutor leading to Christ, that we might be declared righteous due to faith —Gal. 3:24

So now that this faith has arrived, we are no longer under that Law. —Gal. 3:24

With Mosaic law’s coming to an end is based on Jesus’ words: “Do not think I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I came, not to destroy, but to fulfill; for truly I say to you that sooner would heaven and earth pass away than for the smallest letter or one particle of a letter to pass away from the Law by any means and not all things take place.” But note that Jesus did not say that the Law would never pass away or would always be binding, but that it would not pass away until it was all fulfilled. With the fulfillment of its prophetic patterns or shadows it did come to an end. And so we read regarding the law of Moses that God “has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the torture stake.” It therefore follows that Jesus’ subsequent words of censure to those breaking the Law and teaching others to do the same would apply only while that Law was in force.—Matt. 5:17, 18
Jake@ so your way out.
snore........
So I have to have ritual ablutions every month, destroy all mouldy leather garments, sacrifice doves and lambs several times a year, refuse to eat pork or prawns or lobsters, refuse to accept priests if they have any bodily faults or ailments, and kill my sons if they disrespect me. And agree if any daughters of mine are raped that they must be killed, because it must have been their fault.
Really ! Really ???
Good life is it possible just for once you could come up with something original rather than cutting and pasting everything, some original thought that may spark a debate, or is that your problem, you are not capable of debate, you are just a jumped-up photocopier?
I think goodlife is not human, but a robot. It's easy for robots to register on answer bank. I might be one too! Who can tell?
More cut and paste - yawn - and yours is not the only holy book, goodlife. Give others a break - yours is not the only way.
-- answer removed --
are you going to answer people's questions and contributions to the discussion; or are you going to ignore them and/or continue to cut and paste random things that have no bearing on your original question? you don't get any rewards as far as i am concerned (and why should you? - surely knowing god, getting comfort and reference from [the] religion and carrying out his work is based on a combination of achieving (personal and spiritual) self-actualisation and being a (truly) altruistic individual? certainly not motivated by personal gain, the influences of the church or 'advertised' / expected reward as you have teferred to. the jw view of religion and modern life is extremely outdated and seems to run on the basis of fear, control and the suppression of its congregations lives...

one example of this is when my hubby was brought up as a jw, and the elders who preached to the younger members of the congregation repeatedly told them they would only be experiencing a 'true'; 'fulfilling' and religiously rewarding life if they didn't go to college or university and instead went preaching door-to-door as soon as they could to 'spread the word'. this was not unusual or specific to this one congregation and is still expected from some churches and more devout parents, leading to real conflict within families and in the personal/spiritual development of the child.

these elders, of course were all well educated and financially well off (and able to spend lots of time on their 'religious' activities) because they had all gone to university and had spent time building careers or a business after leaving school themselves. this is also how they achieved their 'respect'; social standing within the group; and ability to spend time 'guiding' (telling/interfering with) others in how to live their lives - particularly the young and impressionable members of the congregation and more devout (?fervent) parents.

highly hypocritical, if you ask me (like most religions i have had experience with - either personally or professionally); very selfish; contradictory; and a narrow-minded approach to guiding the very young people that are the future of their religion. surely not putting the fear of the wrath of god into children (they were told they would go to hell if they didn't do as they were told); making them feel they would be a disappointment to their parents; and lacking the true the freedom to pursue all aspects of a satisfying and rewarding life would be less conducive to keeping members (and happy, honest ones at that)?

one other example of the utter idiocy of the jw beliefs/practices was demonstrated by the separation/divorce of mr kicker's parents. his mother finally left is dad after 11 years of marriage after he had physically and mentally abused her and the children in completely hideous ways (which i won't go into detail here out of respect for mr kicker). while his mother and all 4 of the children were immediately 'disfellowshipped' i.e. kicked out of the religion completely and ignored by everybody (including all their family and friends) and left alone to get on with completely rebuilding their lives without support, compassion or assistance. his dad, however, (wife and child abuser - unbelievably even again in a further 2 marriages) was allowed to remain in the religion and continue to be an active member... (cont).

that's the part of my husband's life story that leaves me speechless, really....and tells me all i need to know about your religion, perspectives and priorities in life, goodlife. as for your name...that might be fitting for you in all your moral superiority and supposed 'knowledge' - but can you say that of others around you? do you (and others) help your congregation members (particularly the young and impressionable ones) navigate the complications of life, individuality, and more difficult experiences they may have...or do you turn your back on them when the going gets really tough?
also, i seem to remember an incident with mr kicker's aunt refusing to allow her 8 yr old daughter a blood transfusion after an operation (and she did actually need it, it was an unexpected and critical health problem). i just don't understand how any mother could do that to their child, or how a religion interprets the bible in that way and expects their followers to have to make this choice (mr kicker could explain that little issue waaaaaaaaay better than me!). eventually, her muggle husband (merely tolerated by the family and religion - and all but invisible) who was away on business was contacted and gave his permission, just in time for the transfusion to take place - but i dread to think about what would have happened if he was not around or aunty was married to another jw .i actually think she was secretly glad because it gave her the 'out' that she needed to go back to her congregation and say that she had tried (when she hadn't) and was thinking of divorcing him (which she wasn't).

nothing would stop me from getting the best for my child, and i would sell my soul to the devil to give him a chance to live/recover from illness or injury - and i think i would even go so far as to do something like prostitute myself for money if it were required to pay for medical treatment, for example (and god would forgive me eventually anyway, because i was [luckily!] born a catholic).

i need to add that i think i know the answer to my last question to you (do you turn your back on people when the going gets tough?). as jw's are famously inflexible and blinkered in their thinking, when somebody steps out of line or their life circumstances change dramatically and this conflicts with your strict doctrine - all jw's (including you) will turn people away from a life they have only known/their support network/family/friends/children etc. we all know what they are and what you/jw's don't like or tolerate. what i can't believe, is when you do live your life like that and don't seem to be addressing modern social issues or family/life agenda as a church, religion or individual (like some of the christian faiths have done, for example), how you can then turn to another and preach to them about anything. you need to get your own (and collective) house in order before you go around and tell everyone else they are wrong or are going to burn in hell. and check out all your secret smokers/drinkers/shaggers.....which could take a considerable amount of time, i suspect. cheerio.
Goodlife, why did you list a good reason not to believe that this god you seem to think is the best thing in the world?

//[i]Throughout the world, 40 million people are infected with HIV, 20 million have died from AIDS, and 750 000 babies are born with HIV infection every year,” reports a Britain’s me... blah blah blah[i]// can hardly be considered support to highlight the 'good and fair god' that you portray.
Icg, good post. I suspect it will fall upon blind eyes though.

Atalanta@Obviously you have not read the Bible properly.
Also, you have not digested what I have said.

We are no longer under the Mosaic Law. But even if we were, you would not kill your daughter for being raped, (as you suggest). If a person is in that position she would shout and scream etc. etc. thus showing she was in need of help - if she didn't then she was consenting to the act.
There is a difference!

lcg76@ How long ago was this?

I have been a JW for nearly 30 yrs and I have not experienced this. I have also been in several different congregations. For those who have a true love
of God they will see that the Bible guidelines are for their benefit. But of course, not everyone, even JWs have a genuine love. Even Jesus accepted this. Look at the Jews. They said they had a love but what did they do? They put Jesus to death.

If someone does not want to be a JW, they are not forced to be one. If your husbandfelt like that then there was nothing preventing him from leaving.
As for not going to college or university, there are many young ones who have done that. There are many who chose not too. Elders are not elders because of social, or financial position.
Many elders are poor, and are no more wealthy than anyone else.
Of course, there are those who are rich and there are those who have good jobs but it is not the norm.

BTW we do not burn in hell. So I dont know where you got that from there is no burning hell. but there again that is what Catholics preach. Which is worse?,
