You cannot be serious, If you think that the catholic church does not impact on the world outside catholicism then you need a reality check. A large proportion of the worlds problems have been caused by organised christianity, including catholism. If you need a list I am sure many kind AB ers would be happy to bore you witless.

My point is simple, although I could expand the point massively.....
The world is not the same place as it was 20, 30, 50, 100 or 1000 years ago. I would never deny anybody their faith nor mock their beleifs. But the principles that the Catholic church is based upon are centuries old and because they are a set of standards derived from the bible, they never will change, but, the world continues to change around them.
Laws can and will change based on circumstance. Laws can be reviewed if they are out dated. Religious beleifs stand still in time whilst the world changes unrecognisably around them.

And then go on to imply that the rest of my post somehow suggests that this pope will be a liberal reformer - did you actually read my post? How do you arrive at that conclusion if so?

There was a lot of smiting and wrath and fiery angels in those days. Homosexuality is a sin according to the Bible. The Ten Commandments are a base line of what is considered to be a sin. 'Thou shalt not covet thy neighbours ass' springs to mind. The Catholic church must now demonstrate that the old regime is out. Allowing priests to marry would be a start. Not sure which of the world's problems he could make his mark without being told to wind his neck in. Perhaps funding a children's sanctury when all the paedos have been put to grass. I doubt he could be asked to be the ambassador to N Korea to tell them to stop firing their rockets at the US. Some people here are up in arms about our new Archbish of Canterbury making noises about the Government's welfare reforms instead of sticking to his Churchly duties.

Potentially allowing or advocating contraception seems rather a long way from fulfilling that ^^ requirement. How would that deal with the schism that exists between world religions?

Khandro, why is it a silly question? What does birth control have to do with addressing the schism that exists between religions – which is what you advocated and what I queried.

So far he seems a normal sort of bloke, man of the people - he goes on the bus, he's taken no popely privileges. I hope that as a man who came to the priesthood later in life (as did the new Archbishop of Canterbury) he'll bring a bit of real life into his papal decision making.
