Leaving out the god factor which religious philosophy is for you ?

I have in the past read up on all the major religions and I refute all their gods but have found some of their other beliefs, especially concerning a sixth sense , fit in with my own experience of the world. What's your's ?

So far Buddhism is the top of my list but I haven't any first hand knowledge apart from visiting the odd temple.

Can you just clarify your Higgs Boson comment please modeller? Curious what you mean by it all.

jim It was an answer to chakka who said
//modeller, there is no evidence of any energy radiated from our brains. If there were, that radiation would have been classified by now//

I was pointing out it is only now ,50 odd years after it was proposed in 1964 that the Higgs Boson has been found. So just because we haven't found something by now does not prove conclusively it does not exist.
This is particularly true when it comes to radiation.
Well I suppose trying to keep an open mind I wouldn't want to definitively rule out the possibility of some sort of energy radiated from our brains other than heat. But no-one has proposed to my knowledge a sensible source of it, which means that unlike the Higgs boson anyone searching for it would have no idea what they were looking for. That in itself is a key difference, that one, the boson, has sound theory behind it, but the other, some form of brain-emitted radiation, has no theory at all at this point other than wild speculation.

Still, the brain is very poorly understood, so maybe it does do weird things that we would think silly. I am very highly sceptical, though.

Energy, mmmm not so sure about dismissing it!

A few years ago I used to go out rabbit hunting about twice a week, often I would take my lurcher to catch the rabbits. now at maybe 11.00 or 12.00 pm I would start thinking about venturing out if the weather conditions were right, no decision made, just a fleeting thought, my Lurcher (Lass) would come straight over to me wagging her tail and getting excited and ready to go. I swear that I gave no indication of anything, literally a fleeting thought. Strange I know, but she sensed something!! maybe an energy?
Dogs are just cool though.

Could also have been routine?
Jim, no not routine, I had no routine, she sensed something within a split second of a thought!
Again, Dogs are cool.

Actually most pets seem to be able to get to know their owners well. Goodness only knows why. My chickens learn a routine, and also seem able to see or hear us at the door from 20 yards or so away even when we are being quiet. So animals just seem to be able to pick up on things that we can't. Even so, I doubt it's a mysterious, hitherto undetected energy. More likely to be just the other senses, better-developed and better-used than ours.

I hesitate to quote an anecdote but may I give one example of hundreds which my family experienced over a period of 40 years. We treated it as normal .
I was in the army and was suddenly taken to hospital . I had no intention of telling my parents. However when I got back to my unit a week later there was a letter from my mother saying " What has happened I saw you in a hospital bed ? " Incidently she was in England and I was in Egypt. At that time the only communication was by letter which took about 4 days.
RATTER15 -

Pheromones perhaps? You say you gave no indication but that may not have been the case from your dog's point of view. Since a dog's sense of smell can be up to 10,000 times more sensitive (depending on the breed) than a human it is entirely possible that your thoughts of rabbit hunting triggered a chemical reaction in you that your dog could detect and recognised as being a precursor to going out for a walk / hunt.
You may be right Birdie. Who knows, very weird though.
ludwig and birdie, From what you both say on page 1, Tao might be of interest to you, I can recommend this book; Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation
modeller - I am concerned only with your use of the word 'energy'. You are using that word as if energy radiated from the human brain actually existed. How have you detected and measured it? If radiated, where does it lie on the electromagnetic spectrum? Do you feel entitled to assume that it exists just because you believe it, without the need to supply any evidence for it?

By all means invent your own word for something you want to believe in, but please don't hijack a very specific scientific word which has a definite meaning.
Re karma. I can understand some find the concept distasteful when they know someone suffering from, say, a disability. That is natural enough, since one does not wish to think the sufferer has somehow caused their own problem from past actions. But this distaste can have no bearing as to whether karma is a genuine part of reality or a fantasy. IMO the words attributed to Mr. Roach regarding rape victims, show, at least to my mind, a misunderstanding of the concept. (Or maybe it's I who misunderstand ?) Victims are just that. They are suffering the result of someone else creating bad karma, and so unlikely to be tackling past bad karma of their own; since that would imply a reality whereby something deliberately targets individuals during their present life in order to punish them, rather than one where everyone starts out with problems caused by themselves.

Re the OP. Personally I tend not to align much with any religion, but as has been mentioned, many come up with decent models of how to live a good life. It's just that I'd hope I didn't need someone to tell me what a good life is since I hope I can work that out for myself. I guess being brought up in the Christian faith I tend to go along with what I was exposed to in my youth, but aside from that I think I'm fairly free of established religions of any sort, considering myself more spiritual than religious.

birdie //Pheromones perhaps// I think that is frequently the case. I wonder over what distance that applies. I have a friend who dislikes dogs and many react badly towards him either slinking away or become agressive. He's been bitten several times. The point is they react at hundreds of yards away before they can really see him ( dogs don't have good sight anyway ) .
On one occasion when we were walking together an alsatian ran towards us , ran past me and bit my friend.

chakka //By all means invent your own word for something you want to believe in, but please don't hijack a very specific scientific word which has a definite meaning. //
I Didn't Invent or Hijack Anything !! I said that was the words used by the Buddhists to explain what they meant by their word Karma.

They 'Not Me' see Karma as a force of power, a source of energy, derived from their thoughts and actions ( hence their term moral ).
Which is radiated ( unless you have a better word ) and has the power to influence others and their environment .
It may be a load of bunkham but that is the way THEY see it .
You now have a few more words to be pedantic about , force, source, radiate, power, influence, environment, and moral.

May I add, I said // Sorry if I have got it all wrong////Maybe any ABer buddhists can explain it better. //

You chose to ignore that and win a few brownie points with your
// pseudoscientists, quacks// remarks. W

To answer the original question.. A philosophy that requires any candidate deity to provide inconravertable evidence of it's existence several times over several millenia(no good having deities with a life span of a few micro- seconds).

Which was : #Which Religious Philosophy Could Be For You ?#

Your answer doesn't add up. The question was which one ,if any, could be for you . There are thousands to chose from in the world , what's all this
micro-second fantasy you are talking about.?
Unless it's in that Pseudo-science world you are so fond of.

But there's nothing in this thread. No one has mentioned deities apart from you. Ratter mentioned Buddhism and it doesn't have deities at all .

Try Chatter-Bank . They won't know what you are talking about but you might get some Pseudo-science answers.
OG ---- Very eloquently put Bravo :-)
Modeller, why so sour, I answered your question didn't I? You didn't state that I had to choose an existing religious philosophy and it is axiomatic that a religion has to have a deity. Buddhism doesn't have a deity so is not a religion but a belief system. Since we have no evidence of the existence of any deity other than as pieces of carved wood and stone we have no idea how long they exist. My notion of a micro-second deity was a way of open- mindedly considering the possibility that the 'god' that supposedly created the universe only lasted as long as that act of creation. My other answer is 'Why?'
Question Author
jomifl You didn't answer what was a simple question.
I specifically said #Leaving out the god factor which religious philosophy is for you ? #

Your answer:
//A philosophy that requires any candidate deity to provide inconravertable evidence of it's existence several times over several millenia(no good having deities with a life span of a few micro- seconds). //

Which actually means 'There isn't one for you.'
