Mrs L, there are two people in a marriage, you know! I was married in a cathedral, no less; there's a solemn edifice to Christian beliefs; but that is what what my wife wanted, being a genuine, churchgoing, fully paid-up Christian herself. It was of no concern to me. She was entitled to have her beliefs respected.
I may be wrong, but I would have thought that for an atheist to get married in church (an atheist at the time of marriage) they would have to lie about being an atheist. And given that the ceremony - yes Ummm, it is especially long winded! - includes a solemn commitment to raise any children born of the marriage 'in the faith' it would seem rather hypocritical even if just to appease your partner. Having said that, they are nice places and if you want a church wedding for the photos, why the devil not.
I was married in a church the first time, I was an Atheist but my Wife to be had very strict Catholic Parents, She (the wife to be) wanted a church wedding and I went along with it. I thought, what the hell, It wont hurt, it was the flower festival week and the church looked amazing, everybody was happy :-) Now I would not even entertain the idea, Carakeel and myself will be getting married soon, when we get around to it. There will be no mention of any God and it wont be in a church. Actually the important part wont be in a registry office either, we will have to get it officiated by some legal procedure but that is just paper work that has to be done.
