According to the holy bible tithing is a spiritual law encouraging one to give a portion of their earned income. Practicing this habit helps one find abundance, fulfillment, and gratitude in their everyday lives.
When a person tithes, the universe that works under the spiritual law of tithing says - 'if you have that much to give, then you are open to receive more'. As we fulfill our part of the covenant by giving, then God fulfills his part by continually blessing us.
goodlife - seeing that everything is planned (my philosophy) then no one is free we are all slaves to the hand that's dealt us.... That's me...the ONE PERSON.... people say to me..."Oh god, not you again...". Bet you didn't know I'm the one and only did you!
Does he care society? btw I do give a portion of my earned income even though I don't have much...better to give than receive I think but only because I love giving, not for reward.
I give my portion by charitable donations, but it's not as much as the 10% of my income which I learned about in my childhood. In Islam, I have read that the annual donation for charity (zakat) is a percentage of your wealth when you have taken out all your living expenses, paid debts, etc. Should we consider that the tithe is on the same principle in Christianity?
Tithes were abolished in the C19 the UK . I'd be surprised to find that any church here, other than the branches of one in Utah, either receives or expects them.
How does Christ's story of the Widow's mite fit in with this ?
What does the church do with the money? Some of us in this country pay 40 per cent or so of our income to the Defender of the Faith and Head of the Church of England. I gather her government applies it to hospitals, relief of the poor, help to foreign travellers seeking shelter without limit of time, and other worthy causes.

I have bypassed the middle men and give directly to charities."
Charities?! Pah! How much of your money goes into administrative cost, and how much is actually geared toward helping the needy? I will not say never, but, as of right now I would not give to charitable organisations. I give to the needy person / people.
