Whatever the ins and outs of this and whether people care or not, the fact is that Halal-style slaughter would never have been countenanced had it not been for religious requirements in the same way that Sikh motor cyclists would not have been provided with an exemption from the crash helmet law but for religious requirements. If laws are made there is...

It goes down the drain at the slaughterhouse.
I think all meat should be labeled appropriately.

I also think peoples budgets will mostly dictate what meat is brought rather than any sentiment over how the animal died.
Sorry, abattoir (PC name)
And after the drain ???
I find it quite worrying that a lot of people seem to be missing the principle involved here. New Judge's 'best answer' sums it up.
I do not accept that for a moment jomifl. If one has not considered the issue one can not come to a conclusion and a positoin on the issue.

In fact I'm rather surprised you would be happy to equate atheism with being unaware.
Keyplus - "... you people should accept it that Islam is the truth..."

Spoken like a true Islamic supremacist. You're an utter disgrace.
This is a matter of animal welfare and informed choice. Without labelling, the average punter cannot possibly know whether or not the meat they're purchasing has been slaughtered humanely or slaughtered in a ritualistically cruel and inhumane way.

Killing an animal by slitting its throat while the animal is conscious is cruel and should be an effrontery to all civilised people (including muslims). There are no two ways about it. Every animal welfare organisation that I am aware of considers it to be inhumane as it causes great pain and distress to the animal. Scientific studies published in the peer reviewed literature in New Zealand have conclusively shown that an animal killed in the Halal way without pre-stunning suffers immeasurably more than one that is pre-stunned. Anyone arguing that this is not the case cannot point to a single comparative study done anywhere in the world that shows the opposite.

In my opinion, killing an animal while it is conscious should be illegal. There should be no concessions made for religious reasons. Since this is not the case, at the absolute minimum all meat should be labelled as either pre-stunned or conscious. The issue of whether or not a religious prayer is said at the moment of death is completely irrelevant to me.
For my sins I am a veterinary surgeon and I did spend time as an official veterinary surgeon in a poultry factory.

When the birds come in they are hung upside-down which confuses/bemuses them for a few seconds before their heads make contact with an electrified bath that makes them instantly unconscious. They then enter a channel where their jugular veins are pierced and they bleed out fatally.

Trust me, I used to spend a lot of my shift right there making sure the system worked and no heads came up once they'd made contact with the water. The truth is that this method of humane slaughter is acceptable to both secular and religious communities in the UK.

Even cattle under the non-religious process are still alive when they bleed out because they have to be for the blood that carries intestinal bacteria needs to be got out of the animal by a beating heart.

In our vacillating relations with invading religions I believe from the chicken's point of view the treatment is the same. What Islam appears to think is offensive to their deity is anything that penetrates the body before slaughter which doesn't happen in the case of chickens. However it does in the case of cattle which are made unconscious by means of a captive bolt being fired into the front of their brain before they are bled out.

The fact that British Jews and Muslims feel their God wants the cattle they eat to be fully conscious when their throats are cut offends and disgusts me deeply having witnessed their suffering for myself.

Believe me if you love animals you have to be an atheist like me- remember the fate of the biblical Gadarine swine?

However when it comes to chickens I believe there is no difference and I think the Sun's running of this story so close to the EMP election is no coincidence.

OG, I can't see the logic of you argument, 'atheist' means without god, regardless of the reason for a lack of god. You seem to think that atheists must be 'anti god' but this can't be since there isn't (aren't) one (or any).
Question Author
colm, do you have any idea how much blood remains in the animal after it has been bled out. I had no idea that blood contained intestinal bacteria, how so?

i am not, nor will i buy halal, on principle. if i buy meat not labelled as halal, then i would have done so against my wishes.
and Brenden is right, sorry if that offends, but many things which suit a small percentage of our population, though growing, are being imposed on the rest, where are the Animal Rights Brigade in all of this, why don't they stand out side butchers that only do halal meats, because as far as i can see they haven't. yet will happily send death threat to staff who work in labs that experiment on animals,

Emmie, they ain't daft, they don't want their throats slit too.
think on this, if a child eats halal meats in school, and the parents are unaware, how would that sit with you, if you don't approve of the method of slaughter, it's wrong, we have been sold a bill of goods,
vote with your feet, don't buy anything that says halal - irrespective that the animal might be stunned beforehand, no one will know that.
we do have strict guidelines on animal slaughter, we know that they may not be always adhered to, only inspections at abattoirs would find that out.
Naoim ////We've proven countless times that Islam is not the truth.////

You are like a child who closes his/her eyes right in the middle of the room and feels that no one can see him/her and then proves to himself (or herself) that he/she was right.

Same way there are a lot of things that you have "proved" here to your own self. But tell you what? you need to leave your house a bit more and meet real people and also have some fresh air. It will do you good.
In fact bacteria are getting into the blood from the intestinal tract immediately after death and can spread quickly through the blood to the rest of the body (agonal bacteraemia) which is why all animals slaughtered are bled out as soon as possible which is achieved most efficiently by having the heart still beating and the animal being suspended by it's hind legs asap after being stunned.

The rabbis use a crate that turns the cow onto it's back, then a sharp blade is run across the throat with the cow still fully conscious. The result is messy and very unpleasant to witness (believe me) but is happening every day in UK abattoirs because of an exemption from humane stunning prior to slaughter which is a legal obligation for everyone else but Jews and Muslims. Needless preventable cruelty allowed by our two-faced politicians to appease followers of pre-enlightenment religions. I know, it sucks doesn't it! They'd probably make an exception for human vampirism if there were a few votes in it for them!
What follows may upset and offend you, proceed with caution. However if you can stomach it compare this,

In truth I never saw anything as bad as that in a UK slaughterhouse but it shows you how sickening religious slaughter is.
