and he appeared in today's world, what would he make of today's Christians, their big elaborate churches and cathedrals, the pope and the Vatican and all their wealth etc...

I would imagine he would probably collapse in tears!

Goodlife, if you need spiritual fear to prevent you from compromising basic human principles of right and wrong, I feel very sorry for you.

‘Lets Suppose For A Minute That Jesus Actually Existed…’

Although I am an atheist, historians are generally of the view that Jesus (the person whose exploits are told within the 4 gospels of the New Testament), did actually exist – and is not some fictional character.
I think he existed, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't who he is claimed to be.
naomi24 - I would agree with that (because God does not exist).

I would love to hear his views on easter eggs.
....not to mention Christ Mass.
Why not just shine for yourself Jordy?
Religion does not have the monopoly on morality.

The gospels were written more than 50 years after Jesus’s death – given the inability of today’s journalist to get the facts correct less than 24 hours after the event, it is hardly surprising that much of the gospels content is likely to have been exaggerated over the passage of time.
We were discussing this the other day and Naomi thought that Jesus, were he alive today, would be advocating a vote for Labour, and who am I to gainsay Naomi ( ! )
If he only ever existed as a simple carpenter he would probably be a bit overwhelmed!!
I've always thought that the raising of Lazarus was an ill considered miracle. After his resurrection he would have been pointed at and, people being what they are, taunted with calls of, 'Undead', and worse.
Sometimes it's better to let sleeping dogs lie.
Mikey,

If birdie's post is wrong and Jesus did perform all those wonderful feats, the forthcoming election would be a Labour landslide if he was alive today!!
agchristie....If Jesus were around today, his "miracles" would be examined in minute and exacting detail, by every media organisation in the world. But as I am an Atheist, he would have a job on his hands to convince me !
Well he probably would collapse in tears, but not from the pain of being nailed to a cross, coz that's illegal these days.
More so from seeing how mankind has advanced, if you are a believer of course.
Would he be as ease in the company of people who were intensely relaxed about some becoming filthily rich? He'd hardly be a Blairite, then?
sandy....he would hardly have been an advocate for the Tory Party either !

I think he would have been on the picket lines with the Miners, rather than the other way around. At least that is the way that I was brought up to believe Jesus would have behaved !
