When people say 'God is kind and loving' just because their own lives aren't a perpetual daily saga of misery, hunger, thirst and disease...
How self-centered and oblivious must one be to declare something so obtuse when MILLIONS are born into the poverty cycle every week and will spend virtually all of their lives fighting to stay alive? Millions more are born in and around conflict zones with a very small window of opportunity for anything besides escaping explosions, dogding bullets and making agonising trips all over the place as refugees.
How easy to say 'I'll pray for them' and wash your hands off this stark reality. If a God needs someone to pray in order to help these people, s/he is already an inept OR cruel being.
But seeing as generations of people have been praying and that hasn't done ball to eradicate conflict zones or poverty, maybe you should consider if your prayers are actually being heard by anyone besides yourself. After all, you can never pray to pass an exam, sit on your ass and do absolutely nothing and then pass with distinction, can you?
What a coincidence that your prayers only seem to work when human effort is put into the said task ONLY, eh? And what sort of a loving God prioritises your prayers for landing that promotion over prayers for millions of starving and dehydrated children emaciating away in poverty? Or people dying from wars- most of which are fought IN HIS NAME?

My friend is also an atheist , I hasten to add.
@ steg.....I forgot to add....TiC .....sigh
Don't forget that the same deity allows overpaid footballers to score goals, judging by their gestures that so many make after they put the ball in the net, and that is clearly more important than millions of nobodies dying from disease, hunger and conflict.
Wow,well let's step away from the alcohol and mind our steps as we we get off our high horse and then onto the soapbox and into the real world. shall we.
/Or people dying from wars- most of which are fought IN HIS NAME?/

Really? I mean really? Would you mind telling us which undemocratic country you're in as they obviously don't allow you to read books or newspapers, use the internet or watch the news.

Most wars were fought in gods name? I think it's pretty obvious that most wars had hidden agendas such as mass theft, genocide, rape and power hungry attacks by loonies but they don't tell you this at school. They look for a reason and then use differences to justify their wars.

"Oh they're a different social class from us,lets use that reason!"

"Oh they're a different colour from us,lets use that reason!"

"Oh they're from a different place from us,lets use that reason!"

"Oops, these people are from the same place as us, are the same colour and are from the same social class as us,what shall we do? They pray to a different god? lets use that reason!"

If you look at the recent wars most weren't in gods same but were in the names of Presidents Carter,Ford,Nixon,,Eisenhower,Truman,Hoover,Roosevelt,John F. Kennedy,Reagan,Clinton, the chucklebushy brothers,Obama as well as in the name of diamonds, precious metals and oil so let's leave the sugar coating to the guys who work in confectionary and deal with the cold hard facts here shall we and no this isn't an America bashing thread, I love the u.s but raise an eyebrow at some of the leaders actions and then raise 2 when I see how gullable some people can actually be by swallowing their lies and blaming god, ghosts or u.f.o's.

And let us not forget about Hitler.
Everytime I come on here it's time to hit the hay. I'll have to pick this up tomorrow, good evening and may democracy grace wherever it is you come from.
Are you the love-child of Noam Chomsky and Vanessa Redgrave, Broseph?
vetuste_ennemi,I have no idea what you're going on about and have looked up both of those names and am too tired to read the accompanying wall of text that comes with their photos so I have to ask myself these 2 questions.

Is the user vetuste_ennemi putting a well thought out response or thought provoking question which is relevant to the op and on topic? I suspect no.

Is the user vetuste_ennemi completely off topic and is trying to have a laugh at my expense to boost his ego amongst his chums here ? I suspect yes.

Though I could be wrong, I've had about 6 hours sleep in three days so if you're making a cryptic joke which I should easily get then I apologise but if you're not then my comment still stands.
A for vitriol.
B for content.
C for sense of humour.
Oh so vetuste_ennemi it was meant to be funny? Maybe the next time take it to the jokes section?

If it's any consolation I did chuckle at your /A for vitriol,B for content,C for sense of humour./ So it wasn't a completely wasted night.
God helps those who help themselves.
They should be forever intervening to save mankind from themselves ?
Tough love I think it's called, letting the species learn for itself ?
Broseph; //Oh so vetuste_ennemi it was meant to be funny?//
He tries hard. :0) Schlaf gut !
Hope you've had a good rest, Broseph.
Regarding your original post I agree completely with your observation that most wars have causes other than religion. I'm less happy with your stance on the USA, which is very Chomsky-like.
I was not trying intentionally to "have a laugh" at your expense, and I apologise for having given that impression.

PS: my only "chum" on AB is Khandro.

Your talented friend would be best utilised pressing for birth control to avoid poverty/disease/starvation and not blame god for mans mismanagement.
^^ The two main religions make up over 50% of the world's population, disapprove of birth control. No doubt to flood the world with their brain washed followers.
Tamborine, //Your talented friend would be best utilised pressing for birth control to avoid poverty/disease/starvation and not blame god for mans mismanagement//

But when God’s representatives on earth, who claim to know what God wants and thinks, forbid the use of birth control, who else can we blame?
The truth, Ratter15 but, as observed by some of the replies, not the entire truth.

At any scale; alliances; nations; provinces; settlements; 'tribes'; families; family members: the reasons for rivalries and, ultimately, conflict are much the same. The need for space in which to live and resources to sustain self and offspring.

Contraception is a great point to raise but ask yourselves this: would a rich person also forgo children? If they did, wouldn't there be an unseemly gathering of vultures, come to carve up their worldly goods when they die? Another source of conflict. Having progeny, to pass ones wealth to, serves to keep the peace.
(I've been doing some background reading on Schleswig-Holstein, as I am watching 1864)

Admittedly, the poor have children because they see more manpower as the solution to increasing household income. As education levels improve, number of children per family drops to about two, due to costs of education. The kids escape poverty through higher quality jobs and population becomes static when births match deaths.

When we stop population expansion and come to equitable terms with neighbouring countries then we can stop having wars. Unfortunately, it is impossible - not to mention distasteful - to administrate family sizes. Every "oops, I've had three" cannot be allowed to force another family to have their quota reduced to one. As above, it is the more educated (or those who struggle to fund their child's schooling) who are already avoiding exceeding two.

I wanted this post to be short and snappy but it rambled. Just some thoughts for others to carve up.

In short, if there are any mathematicians reading this, could they please have a go at working out whether:-

Feudalism is a subset of religion?

Religion is a subset of feudalism?

I use the word feudalism because it encompasses concepts of territory, resources and dynastic inheritance. In the rambling post I said the reasons are familial, at root and it was just a matter of scale, beyond that.

So, is religion exploiting power heirarchies or do power hierarchies exploit religion? Or a bit of both?
