After reading Theland's thread below (who or what created the universe) and the debate that developed between Naomi and others regarding ancient aliens visiting Earth, I thought that it may deserve a thread of its own.
I read von Daniken's books as a teenager and later found out that much of what he wrote was fabricated. *BUT* there have been other authors who have had the same ideas without Danikens fancies.
Myself, I'm open minded about it all, but still a fascinating subject to discuss.

I mean the one author was believed to be on to something until evidence seemed to show otherwise. Why would other authors claiming visitations be given the benefit of the doubt ? Aren't they too imposing wishful thinking on old artifacts, etc. ? Making claims the layperson hasn't a hope of disputing well, but who are likely to think, fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice ...
Where is their clinching argument in favour of a visitation from an advanced race in an immeasurably vast universe, when presently no alien civilization seems to have already colonised around these here parts.

If you look at the photographs contained in the books of EvD there are some really strange, anomalous 'things' around the world.
Some will have rather prosaic explanations, others not so much....
My Mum was fascinated by the books of EvD and I started to read them in my early teens. We didn't know, at that time, that EvD lied about the things he had seen, where he had seen them and what he had been told about them. He name-checked Scientists, Geologists, Astronomers and Archaeologists but misrepresented their findings, theories and conclusions.
However, discounting the fabrications and hyperbole still left a satisfying number of puzzles to be mulled over. I honestly can't remember the names of all the books/authors I have read who have broadly the same opinions as EvD.
It is just one of the subjects that seemed to get more complicated as t'interweb became a breeding ground for all sorts of outlandish theories and conspiracy nuts.

Why do I think it is exceptionally unlikely that there were 'Ancient Astronauts' who visited Earth? Note say exceptionally unlikely, NOT impossible.
Then main reason is the distance from Earth to a possibly habitable planet. Only in the last 10 years or so have we been able to get any information about planets outside our Solar system. The nearest possible planet is just 3.8 light years away and orbits proxima centauri. However there are many reasons it is not likely to support life. The nearest Planet that is considered to have a better but still remote chance of life is called Kepler 186F and it is 490 light years away.
Why is distence important? Well to have got to Earth the aliens must have travelled here from their home planet. As it is never going to be possible to travel at more than a small % of the speed of light (C) travel from even the nearest Earth like planet would take 100s or more like thousands of years. At 1/10 C it would take 4900 years to get to Earth from Kepler 186F and the same to get back.
I believe the the Universe contains an almost unlimited number of civilisations , however due to the unimaginable distance between them meeting /visiting them or them visiting us is nearly impossible.
I am not ruling out the possibility that an alien civilisation did develop and visit Earth but that possibility is vanishingly small.
Not the least of reasons for this is that we are not 'special' in fact we are an almost totally insignificant planet orbiting an insignificant star in an insignificant galaxy. Why would a highly advanced alien civilisation seek out such an insignificant planet as our Earth?
That is both the question and the answer to this conundrum.

One possibility that has not been mentioned anywhere that I know of is transmitting an intelligence with light, something we are already doing here on Earth. If a means could be developed to reassemble and run a computer program on the surface of another world a virtual being could be created that might be indistinguishable from a living presence or even a 'god' to those who knew no better. Such a program could in theory learn an alien language and respond to questioned asked.
We now also have printers that can recreate objects by simply depositing materials according to programmed instructions. As others have suggested who knows what WE might be able to do in another thousand or million years.
Personally I don't see where any of the above is required for an emergent intelligent species to come up with the idea of a divine overseer of reality or creator. It seems almost inevitable that someone would draw such a conclusion given a lack of understanding of how intelligence arises. But I can't rule out the possibility however remote that we might have been influenced by otherworldly intelligence in our past . . . or future.

I've read all of this with great interest - but another thought. Consider the possibility of 'surfing' gravitational waves.
