A bit of a hiatus (lockdown, work, personal things etc) but finally read the Bible all the way through, again!
How on earth can anybody read this mess and believe its the word of (any) God is beyond me.
Read about a 3rd of it and left of for a bit. (TBH the unrelenting slaughter was getting to me a bit) Picked up again and read whole books at a time. The contradictions alone had me questioning, never mind the bloodshed etc (That was before I got to the new Testament).
Then the New Testament accounts doent agree with each other.
I tried.
The bible is a crock.
Different books, Different authors, different theologies.

Modern church...
We'll try to reconcile them all and call it the bible...
Good luck with that one.

Yes, it is amazing that people take it literally. I have been studying the works of Zechariah Sitchin, who interpreted the Sumerian tablets. The Anunnaki Chronicles, one of his has shown how the Anunnaki, an Extraterrestrial species actually created us and the bible was based on their clay tablets. When I read Genesis and came upon the text, "and God said let US make man in OUR image," it began to fall into place. Some former evangelical pastors, now atheists, have written books examining the bible. One of my favorites is "God the most Unpleasant character in all of fiction" by Dan Barker.
Well at least it gave us 'Turn, Turn, Turn' or 'To Everything There is a Season' (adapted from Ecclesiastes by Pete Seeger), and made famous by various people, notably The Byrds.
warrior, where do you stand on brexit?
Do you really need to ask that TTT? I would think the answer was obvious.
A story book for primitive people's to explain what we mostly now understand
Selected bits to create a supporting history for the church in Rome to base its claim to power.
There is more truth and advice on the Discworld books of Terry Pratchett
//The whole of the Old Testament is preparation for the coming of Jesus.
The New Testament is all about the new covenant God has made with mankind through Jesus.//

That’s what Christianity would like us to believe - but I don’t. Not for a moment.

//if you are looking for a book which describes the true nature of mankind and the true character of God, the Bible is it//

Yes, it certainly does describe God’s nature. He tells us quite openly that he’s jealous and vengeful.

//Zechariah Sitchin ….. an Extraterrestrial species//

I think it possible that something like that happened - it makes more sense than the supernatural - but I think Sitchin gets a bit carried away with his theories.
You're a better man than I am. I couldn't get past the ages they were living to without laughing myself hoarse.
TheWarrior // When I read Genesis and came upon the text, "and God said let US make man in OUR image," it began to fall into place.//

This is simply the use of plural as the "royal we".

Beso, I don't think that's true. Other elements of the bible also contradict that.
Nailit, glad to hear your mother is stable and comfortable.

Also glad you completed the task you set yourself. Well done.

Thank you, appreciate that.
Now back to the saber rattling.... ;-)

I honestly dont get how the religious claim to get their morals from the bible....an immoral book if ever there was one. I wouldnt let my kids read it. Would you?
Indeed I encourage it.
Have you ever considered knitting or woodwork to while away the hours?
Douglas if he did I'm sure he'd be able to cause an argument on how to cast off properly, or the correct way to dovetail a joint ;-)

I think that you may be in the wrong catagory for you APG.
This is for thinkers, not Knitters like yourself.
Try crosswords or summit.
Consider the bible as a biased history of the Jewish people. Not the word of God. God leaves no words written or otherwise. God is a source of universal natural evolution. Not some guy with a beard and a bad attitude.
It amazes me how many intelligent people blame God for the many evils that befall mankind, where they are attributed to the deity by the diverse interpretations of religious beliefs by man. Man makes his own perverse God from his own fear driven distorted conflicted consciousness.

Or at best midrash/

LOL! Thinkers who can't spell CatEgory

Never knit in my life

Are you saying people who do crosswords aren't 'thinkers' ?

You go on and on and on about the Bible being rubbish -think most people have got the message now and your posts seem to be a platform for you and a couple of others posturing on how educated you are on something you actually hate.

Why not try knitting...........
Why not start a new category where all the debaters agree on everything from the word go?
All could be friends, and backslap each other for being right, righter, and righterer?
Theland -as I see it going on and on about the Bible being rubbish is just as boring as going on and on about it being the word of God, especially when the people 'debating' are never going to change their minds one iota. I only got involved in the thread to comment on Douglas' post, I tend to avoid religion.
