Had a conversation recently with a ''born again'' type
(First conversation with a real life religionist in a while tbh....)

Thankfully only lasted a few minutes (felt like hours...but theres always one)
The usual subject of morals come from.
Atheists have no morals apparently. Or at least no OBJECTIVE morals without God.
I asked whose God?
Allah? Jehovah? Christ? Dionysius? etc.

I then asked where does God (In whatever way you view him/it/her) get THEIR morals from?
Conversation then petered out. (I was late for work anyway so no great loss)
I was in no way provoking an arguement, simply following through a logical discussion with a
question.

If humans need God's guidence to be moral, then where does God get his guidence from?

We've made god so his morality comes from us. A bigot will believe in a bigoted god and a liberal will project his own liberal views on the god he believes in.

Jehovah is a middle eastern desert deity/demon.
What on earth has he got to do with western culture?

This being was a desert, animal sacrificing, blood-thirsty, war god.
What is he doing in Europe?
Its an abonimation...just like its priests!

nailit; //Morals are not applicable to God....
You couldnt make this up....//

Please give me a definition of what you think a 'moral' is, either absolute or universal, and furthermore, what could it (a man-made concept) possibly have to do with God, whether or not you believe in such an existence ?

Also, why do you continue to post such infantile questions?

Khandro
//Please give me a definition of what you think a 'moral' is,//
A moral is something that we can both agree on!
I think that we can both agree that having ourselves killed, stolen from or having our wives raped by strangers is immoral?

I also think that having people stoned to death for
collecting firewood on a saturday is immoral
Or kids been mauled to death by bears for calling someone 'baldy'
or a woman been stoned to death for not bleading on her wedding night, immoral.

//Also, why do you continue to post such infantile questions? //
In response to your infantile queries!

Also some of us like to use our minds.
You know, asking questions and the such like.
Rather than believing everything that we hear.
(Or, in your case, believing what we want to believe)
nailit, //I also think that having people stoned to death for

Yes, that is intrinsically bad, but what has that to do with God?
and why do you think moral codes vary between societies?
Khandro, //Yes, that is intrinsically bad, but what has that to do with God?//

They're HIS rules! It's ridiculous to say that God doesn't have a moral code. He handed down commandments - laws. He is the ultimate arbitrator. Therefore it follows that he must have a yardstick by which to judge. To say otherwise is simply irrational.
I sometimes wonder if some people have never advanced beyond how things were explained to them in the nursery.
Khandro, as always when you have no sensible answer you resort to rudeness. This is the second time on this thread. Your argument is demonstrably irrational. Don't blame other people for your failings.
Khandro - // Yes, that is intrinsically bad, but what has that to do with God?
and why do you think moral codes vary between societies? //

They vary for exactly the same reasons that their deities vary - both are man-made and are created and refined to suit the culture they serve.
Moral Universalism, a surprisingly good answer from andy-hughes !
\\ Moral Universalism, a surprisingly good answer from andy-hughes !//
even in your praise you cannot resist being sarcastic.
Khandro - // Moral Universalism, a surprisingly good answer from andy-hughes ! //

Your attempts to cover the paucity of your arguments with smokescreens of sarcasm and rudeness fool no-one.
AH, I think Khandro means that you are, in effect, agreeing with him.

andy-hughes: “...attempts to cover the paucity of your arguments with smokescreens of sarcasm and rudeness...”

Unfortunately, This is a widely-used ploy, especially by the tabloids - and an all-to-easy one to slip into, I confess to not being entirely innocent myself regrettably :-(
No sarcasm intended, it's simply that - as he well knows - I'm usually diametrically opposed to most of his pronouncements, but I'm not this time.
^There you go, AH.
We've made god so his morality comes from us.

thank god - god has told someone he is not an anthropomorphic god
phew ! and that took only 138 posts !

( a thousand ABers sream that anthro-goon-dicky is far too long a word for AB !)

the standard of crushing one liners is unusually high this morning
Clever boy, PP! You've spotted another of my posts! That's three within the past few minutes!
